I screw around a bit with djembe. One note in regards to your slap technique: the open tone and slap tone should be played in the same general area, and is instead a tone that's geared by your strike rather than just the position.

To achieve the slap tone on the djembe, you need to spread your fingers slightly, and strike with the tips. It should produce a more definitive "crackling" sound as opposed to merely a higher pitch. It's a quick action that utilizes a whiplash motion in the wrist. Don't expect to get it immediately if it doesn't work; it's a little tricky at first.

true in some areas and untrue in others. i'm african so i know how one tribe swears the fingers are open and another prefers pulling the hand back.
