Let's talk about 'post-rock'.

Does anyone else feel like this title is becoming increasingly misleading? I don't have any examples to draw on from the top of my head, but as I see bands with this description playing more and more shows, I keep getting this feeling like I'm watching a jam-band in a different package. I also find myself asking, "how exactly does this transcend the 'rock' formula, beyond not having vocals?" Examples to come if you really want them, but does anyone see where I'm coming from?

The post rock genre is bloated and full of a lot of shit. But it also has some of the best modern acts around.

But yeah, I know what you mean.

Genres labels are dumb anyway.

I'll agree with that--some of the best live bands I've seen fall under that umbrella (like this band: http://skyburialtn.bandcamp.com). And yeah, genre descriptions have the tendency to get really convoluted. Especially now that folks are putting the 'post-' prefix on just about everything.

the problem with people playing music under this genre, especially new music, is their influences are short-sighted and/or misrepresented. This occurs when a band makes a splash and happens to re/define a certain sound, then you get multiple generations of copycats who just go after that sound but have no clue as to what influences caused it to be developed in the first place....

It's like Total Recall remake; a remake of a movie which is further still an interpretation of short-story. Does the new TR at all relate to the short story or take any direct cues from it....I truly don't think so.

It's the same with these bands; their idea of originality (and indeed our own) is misled. Originality occurs when one is able to fully embody or completely represent a 'creation', in that sense there is never anything 'new', just a more/less true embodiment of its form.

I think that happens in all genres, but is perhaps more obvious in post-rock given the uniqueness of some of the original / most influential bands.

it does happen in all genres, it's almost the extreme opposite of the punk vs metal days in the 70's and early 80's. Now it's just an infinite hybridization and cross-pollination of style and sound.

here is a band that was pretty damn over-looked. They grouped around the same time as Bark Psychosis made their splash. Interesting rock-oriented take with intensive use of Indonesian instruments

what might y'all consider qualifying traits for a post-rock band?

anything that includes the standard rock-combo of guitars/bass/drums, leans on some secondary-genre conventions, and uses the studio instrumentally in the arrangements of the songs.

1. Take screwdriver.
2. Run it along your guitar.

I did that,

all I got was a "screwdriver running along guitar" sound.
