I loved American Idiot, never understood why anyone didnt.

Anyways, I've heard it's coming out later this year, but no 'real' news.

American Idiot was a good album just a little pretentious for Pop Punk...or at least it was when it was made. Now all Pop Punk artists are pretentious ^_^

Well, I enjoyed it because it was something nobody had really done before. I mean, it had a 'story' but it was still accessible (unlike some rock-operas). I also loved that they actually grew up, and talked about things that matter in the world, like religion and politics, and gave up the masturbation jokes.

I love most things Green Day come out with, I wish I did have some news, but nope. Nothing, All I know is that they say they're returning to the older style for a while I think. Can't remember where I read that though.

I'm sure I'll give it a listen. American Idiot was good for like a week, it just didn't have any re-listen value.

But I still like GD and am willing to give them another go.

American Idiot was a pretty awful album. It was riddled with self-important left-wing ideals and half-formed opinions aimed at people under 18 who were looking for someone to make up their mind for them.

Old Green Day is dope though.

I completely disagree.

I think American Idiot is Green Day's best album since Nimrod, both musically and lyrically. So they grew up, they're 40 yr old men, they can't really sing about masturbation any more, I think they needed a new direction, and politics is something that worked for them.

But I really hate one thing. People hate Green Day because of the ****ing fans. That's not fair to the band, they don't choose their fans, and I hate half the ****ing 'emo-punks' that love them.

American Idiot, musically, is about ten steps below both Nimrod and Insomniac. AI is more simplistic, less exciting, and less involving. The biggest mistake though? A pop-punk band trying to make a rock opera.

I don't know how you can say with a straight face that AI was better than Nimrod and still call yourself a competent GD fan.

Wait... I never said it was better than Nimrod, I said best SINCE Nimrod (can't be better than Nimrod, that's by far their best.) The albums between Nimrod and AI were pretty pathetic, at least AI was more than half electric guitars...

And Insomniac isn't that good, Dookie and Nimrod are Green Day's best, and then AI, IMO. I don't really see how it's more simplistic, I think the songs are around the same, and they're as exciting and involving. I really thought AI was great, not their best, but much better than many of Green Day's Albums (Insomniac, Shenanigans or... Warning (ewww))

And why can't a pop punk band make a rock opera? Where is the pop-punk rule book that says 'no rock operas'? I mean, I think it was a bold step for them to try it and do something no one else has done.

Oh right, I remember the rule, punk can never innovate right?

My biggest beef with AI was the complete lack of bass riffs. They've always had some pretty cool bass lines in their songs, and on AI it was just root notes like any other boring pop punk band.

I misread, my bad.

Dookie is good, yes, but calling Insomniac bad is like calling the Bubonic Plague good. Insomniac is one album short of marking the end of an era for Green Day. After Nimrod their sound changed completely, and IMO not for the better. And yes, Warning is bad. Sadly, it was the first GD album I bought.

Because the prefix in "rock opera" is rock and pop-punk is not a naturally diverse enough genre to pull it off. Nothing against them. Kudos for trying, but it blew fat cock. It was ****ing horrible.

Where is the pop-punk rule book that says, "operate outside of the parameters of your personal talent to make more money"? I'm sure that rule book is sitting on the desks of Simple Plan and must have passed by Blink 182 around the time they made their self-titled album, but it's disappointing to see Green Day following the same path. And saying that they're doing something no one else has done is like saying they took a shit and forgot to flush for the very first time in recorded history.

Innovation =/= self-destruction

And stop calling them punk. They're not punk goddammit.

American Idiot was alright, although the title track and JoS got annoying after a while. And, seeing as this is going to be a "power pop" album, it;ll be a hit and miss. Just have to see.

This I also had a problem with, as I used to play bass, and there were no good bass lines...

My first Green Day album was Nimrod, and it's still my favourite. I honestly hate Insomniac, it doesn't have any Green Day-ish songs. After Nimrod though, they just changed, and went all acoustic for Warning...

Perhaps it isn't, but I'm arguing that it was great to try it, and I disagree, I thought it was a much better album then they'd done in years. At least it went back to their punk-based formula.

Well I thought Blink's S/T was excellent as well. I like it when a band tries new things and expands their sounds. I guess that's why my favourite Metallica album is Load/Reload, while most hate them, I love them for being more alt rock.
