Lesson: Creating linear grooves/fills from 8th note feel grooves

Heres a really funky way to mess about with any groove to make it linear.

For example heres how to do it with a normal 8th note groove.

1. Make up any 8th note groove you can think of.

Heres one i made earlier, lol, always wanted to say that.

------------------------------------------

2. Get rid of any hi-hat notes that land on any other note (e.g snare, bass, tom... etc) and add closed and/or open hihat notes to wherever there isn't a 16th note being played. (This can be changed and you can alter how many 16th note rests are to be filled with hi-hat notes)
Make sure you never place any two notes at the same time as another!!

Here you now have a linear groove because no two notes are ever played at the same time.

------------------------------------------

3. Try then mixing up the placings of the sticking... Here i have changed the notes to be played on opposite parts of the kit, but the sticking is exactly the same... seems easy enough at a glance!

------------------------------------------

4. Here is another way you can mix up a linear groove... what i have done is used the 8 sixteenth notes from beat 1 and 3 from step 2.
And 8 sixteenth notes from beats 2 and 4 from the groove from Step 3.

So you get this... the sticking is a bit weird, but thats the whole point of the exercise! to get you playing things you wouldnt have thought about by yourself!

And heres the finished, muddled groove...

------------------------------------------

Now try adding some 32nd notes or 16th note triplets or try applying other things you have been learning to this exercise to really mess with your groove and make up some weird stuff!!

Most importantly, HAVE FUN!!

(This is a copy of my lesson from the lessons section of mxtabs, I thought some kind of integration was going to happen... rather than just another sub-forum)
