books on theory

do you guys have any recommendations on some good books i could pick up on theory? i'm looking for something that really breaks it down. i know a little bit, but it's not exactly a strong foundation. also, something that explains how to apply it would be wonderful.

thanks in advance.

berklee press has books that are cheap, and cover everything you need to know. or even the berklee book store. the books are called harmony I-IV
