Western surplus food a threat for 3rd World countries!

Most countries of the Western world have financial aid programs for the agriculture industry to keep food prices cheap and secure domestic food production.

It's yesterdays news that Africa and Southern-America do have food shortages. The surplus food from Western goes to the 3rd World countries two routes: As donations or as exported surpluss food. While it is good that people will have food to eat, this export food is damaging the economic developement of the 3rd World countries because it is cheaper than the local food.

This leads to child labour and dimnishing of domestic agriculture in a country. When some sweatshop industry comes to the area, people will start to have money for food. The food is then exported from the Western countries and the price competition will lead to the destruction of local farms (since the 3rd World countries can't produce food with government funding), because it will be better for everyone that the land lord will sell the land for non-food production facilities (more profit, more food). However, prosperity will also increase the wage demands. When wages become a problem the industry might collapse and the same scenario would repeat. Domestic agriculture is a must for other industry to develope in a country.

Western worlds government funding in agriculture is making the competition in free markets unfair for 3rd world countries.

In my opinnion the "export food being threat" is highly questionable argument and it seems to have strong spin.

For example, how significant is the share of export food in 3rd world food markets? Which products are exported and their relation to the subsidies? Is it worse that people would starve or if the food production is in unfair competition situation... The article was in "opinnion section" (dunno what it is in english, not a native you know) of local news paper written by some big person in Christian aid organization. It is obvious that this article was promoting donation work. However it might be true (or obvious...) that subsidied industry might cause unfair competition situation in free markets. Perhaps rights for import duties for food might be an answer.

No, the problem is that Third World societies remain overwhelmingly agrarian, but cannot produce food with the same effeciency as producers employing First World agricultural techniques. The effect is multiplied by subsidies, particuarly those given in Western Europe (re, France). Therefore, when Western farmers trade with Third World countries to get rid of their surplus produce, the market glut forces prices below subsistence levels, and local farmers are unable to support themselves.

Therefore, Western governments should cease subsidising inefficient farms in their own nations, and if they must do anything, divert the money to aid schemes to help establish infrastructure in the Third World so that it may compete with the more effecient western models.
