Well, understandable on the part of the employer, although I don't know if any employers seriously think that rampant sex and drinking is anything unusual for college kids. I do think that if you don't want that information made public you shouldn't put it online, so it's really up to the students not to do that. I don't use Facebook, although I had never even thought of this reason. Now I'm even more justified

Haha, it's a good thing I don't drink like most "cool" college kids do :-)

Well the employers are being stupid in thinking that it's a reasonable representation of the person, sure, but you just don't post pictures and stories about yourself on the internet if you don't want people to see it.

If anything maybe this will kill Facebook and I won't have to constantly listen to people talking about it.

This is quite moronic, the fact that they end up not choosing people for joking around on the internet

I hope the employers realise that people can create fake profiles of other people.

I would agree that the companies are gambling a lot on going by these profiles, but in a way I understand the ability of a Facebook profile to turn off an employer from hiring them.
Sure, it doesn't represent all that they are, but in the case of Facebook at least it does pretty well represent what they care enough about themselves to show, in a lot of cases. For college students, anyway, I think it's kind of a bad show for a girl to have a picture of herself wearing a T-shirt that says, over her breasts, "Why have brains when you've got these?" and captioning it with "the shirt i got when i was flunking out of school!!1", or for a guy to have an "interests" section that revolves entirely around different brands of beer. Regardless of whether it's actually justified in reality, it's understandable that "respectable companies" would drop these people like hot potatoes. If you have to joke, make it private enough so that people who don't know you well enough to tell if you're just being silly don't misconstrue it. Or just be smarter about what you decide to put up. The solution's as simple as that. The thing about the satirical essay is REALLY stupid, though. You get punished for criticizing business or something like that? That's more of what I have a problem with, that you could get canned just because of what you think about something. |

This is why I'm very careful of what I put on my Facebook. I enjoy using it because it's extremely easy to keep in touch with old friends, and as long as you are aware that it is in fact public then you should be smart enough to screen yourself.

If you post it on the net for all to see then it's your own damn fault what comes of it. You can either not post it, or there are options you can set to make it so only friends can view photos/profiles. |
