Help with Synth Samples

I wanted to know if anybody would be willing to help me out. My band's keyboard player is looking to add vintage Moog, Mellotron and ARP synthesizer samples to his keyboard. He says that he has a USB to Midi cable, and wants to know how he could go about doing this. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

MIDI is a format of instructions not data as is. So it would be impossible.

If he has a keyboard that can store user samples (i.e. Triton, Fantom, etc.), that'd make things a lot easier.

Otherwise, he would have to bring along a laptop, and use his USB > MIDI cable to hook the keyboard to the computer. So basically the keyboard would control the sounds in the laptop, and you'd have to take the line out of the computer rather than the synth.

By the way at the NAMM show Gmedia showed off their new product, which has all of that sweet Mellotron samples and stuff. There are plenty of VSTis that emulate Moog and ARP synthesizers so no problem there.

Once you get the keyboard hooked up to the laptop your sound choices are unlimited practically.

Well, that'd be the ultimate way to go if you can afford it. In the Attila & Dave Project, their keyboardist/bassist has a Fender Rhodes, some bass pedals (like an organ), and some Moog stuff. Some sort of sequencer, too, maybe an Arp also. I forget, I asked him once, but how can you expect me to remember anything, I was so excited just to be there talking to him. :P

yeah obviously its not realistic to get a Moog. I checked ebay and they're like $3000+. I would love to get one of the original ones though.

Well, one thing he could do, though it does take work:
Get Propellerheads Reason 3.0 or whatever.
Look for refills and patches for those instruments (believe me, they exist, I have them for at least two of those).
Hook the computer up to the speakers or amp or whatever is being used.
Hook the keyboard up to the computer, and, using Reason, load up that patch, push the "learn from midi" thing in the right-click menu.

By this point, with every key that they press, it will come out of the speakers with the patch you are using in Reason (in this case, things like a Mellotron). They can even write songs in Reason that way if they want to. Then when you all play, he doesn't even have to do anything but push the play button.
