Tabs... before it's too late?
Now that there is only one tab site still standing, what if it gets shut down?
The MPA is breaching our freedom to learn, but can they really stop us? I remember there was a program where you downloaded tabs and it showed them on your computer. I don't remember the name. Does anybody have this program? There was also a huge archive of all the tabs for the program. Is that archive still online? Does anybody have the archive on their computer? If possible, we could get the program and the tab archive hosted on the web on some random site so people could download the tabs/program. The site wouldn't be a big site like MX so it wouldn't get many hits, because one single person would only have to go there once. Also, any file sharers here? What about getting it on things like Ares and Limewire? They can't shut down Ares or Limewire because those programs are like bongs - they're legal if you use them legally. |

The MPA are taking action because tabs are in breach of copyright laws.
Ultimate Guitar shouldn't get shut down as they claim to have a licence and/or pay royalties for hosting tabs. Also their site is hosted in Russia which is exempt from the MPA's authority. There are two kinds of program that suit your description; Guitar Pro and Powertabs. The Guitar pro archive of tabs is still up at http://www.mysongbook.com. Powertabs, however, have been shut down indefinitely due to fear of legal action. There was some notion that they would perhaps be hosted on Ultimate-Guitar but anything regarding that matter has yet to surface. Hosting the entire Powertab archive would most likely take alot of server space and even then you would still be facing legal action unless the site was hosted somewhere outside of the MPA's jurisdiction. I think you can still find some Powertabs on things like Limewire. I believe some people on here have the entire archive downloaded but I have no idea as to whether or not it is aaliable in p2p networks. |

If you check 911tabs.com, they chack through all tab sites, so there's still sites where it all works.

you know, the fact that they took the tab site off in the first place is absolute bs, they have no right to do this ****. I fail to see how tablerature and lyrical sites are breaking the law. Luckily I happen to run into a petition site where you can sign against this crap. If you want to help out go to http://www.thepetitionsite.com/takeaction/395593044?ltl=1135186124 and sign your name, we're looking for 50,000 people here, so help spread the word.

Moving tabs..
MX had a lot of tabs that ultimate guitar doesn't. Or at least a lot of different versions of them. I was thinking, wouldn't it be great if someone with access to all the tabs that were on MX (thats hoping they still exist) could send them into Ultimate-guitar? That way we'd still have access to whats been lost here.
I know this could be a big job but if someone that was in charge of MX could contact someone on Ug.. I think it'd be cool anyway.. |

I believe that tab sites are often considered illegal because some ****heads just tab of their bought books, and not tabbing their own versions, that is, obviously, against copyright laws, and why not, really, they ARE stealing other peoples work... So I'd say, if everybody just posted their own stuff, there would be no problem.

Woah, I had no idea this was happening. Okay so what I've gathered so far is that tab sites are being shut down because if you learn the songs then thats just as bad as downloading them?? OKay, I am going to **** my pants if thats whats going on. Please can someone link me or just tell me where I can get info on whats happening.
Thanks |

If the bands don't want their music being played by adoring fans, then why bother making it? People will find a way to play their music through some other medium labeled "illegal." Why should I pay $10.95 for the tablature sheets when I just spend $14.99 on their CD?
The MPA can back off - as can Jack Thompson for screwing up my video games. True, the bands did copyright their music. Read the CD copyrights "No public performance" so...Playing some Jimi Hendrix bass lines in the seclusion of my bed room is now a "public performance?" Well, if you count Mr. Cosby on the TV and my cat that's crashed out on the bed, I guess it is. In reality all they're doing is screwing us over because their vapid lives are finally getting to them. |

I still don't see why they can shut down tab sites when the tabs are out own interpritation of the song. It doesn't make any sense to me, that's like someone's opinion being illigal.

Essentially since tabs are a re-creation of the Artist's song they are owed money. Free transcriptions of their songs are illegal which is why the MPA are cracking down on them. Tabs have been illegal all along but it's only now that the MPA have finally gotten around to dealing with it. Public performances count as playings in Bars/pubs/clubs etc... There are even plans to make music shop owners pay a fee for all of the people who test out instruments by playing their favourite songs. Quote:

Finding MX Tabs Tabs
You can still find the tabs from mxtabs. Many of them have been saved in the google cache, so if you search for mxtabs + song name, you'll often find the tabs. Then you click on the google cache link at the bottom of the search result.
