Finger stretches

Right now, the most I can really play decently is a 1 octave stretch with each hand (I have really small hands). My hands stretch pretty well already because of my bass playing, but I don't see how they can possibly stretch anymore.

My concern is, in a lot of pieces (I'm still learning though), it seems like I might have to stretch much further than that from thumb to pinky, and it's kind of disconcerting. How much is this going to affect me?

edit: this is for piano btw, didn't this used to be its own forum? =P

Yea-this used to be a piano only forum but recently changed.

I know what ya mean about the stretches. I need to work on it too and I think that it will affect you but you can always get better with it. How long have you been playing?

Ok then. You have plenty of time to work on it then. I was gonna say that if it was a long time and you couldnt get it, you would definately have problems. Just keep working on it and eventually you should see improvement.

Are you using a standard key size piano or a smaller keyed keyboard? either way, 1 octave is still pretty good and it isnt always so much the stretching but the moving around that you will have to do.

Hope all this has helped...

I've been playing bass for a while so I have my finger stretching already more than they used to, and I was wrong I can do an octave + 1 key. They're normal sized keys. The most I can ever see myself stretching is maybe one more, I don't see how my hand could contort anymore
