NBA Season Thread

So, night one is on...Milwaukee wins its first game; Andrew Bogut played solid but didn't seem to assert himself as much as he could've (9 shot attempts? AI takes 9 shot attempts a quarter).

The Hornets blew out the Kings...Yeah, the Hornets are still going to suck this year, but Sacremento is a team on the decline. They'll make the playoffs but as a lower seed and get eliminated early.

San Antonio won...Anyone surprised?

Didn't think so...

Opening day thoughts?

I missed it all. Actually was going to catch a game or two, but fell asleep on my couch. I'll be wide awake for the Lakers vs Denver tonite. I've got my fingers crossed. I didn't even bother with preseason. So I'm a bit in the dark. I saw some highlights here and there. This season should be fun.

Im looking for Cleveland to be strong this year. And I dont not think anyone can compete with the depth the Spurs have. Well maybe besides the Heat

Knicks look very good right now. The team looks like they are playing together and are playing energetically. I haven't seen that in 5-6 years from them. They're only up by 3 but I'm impressed. Hustling on defense, making the extra pass on offense, Brown seems to have made a strong impression on them.

Edit- Nate Robinson's in
I'm a big Nate Robinson fan.

Eddie Curry is only 4/10 on free throws, but he's been very impressive besides that, good on defense and much better hustle on rebounds than he was showing last year. He's scoring a lot down low even with the missed free throws. (12 points)

Wow Robinson is fast. That was an awesome pass to Curry for the dunk. Great teamwork. Knicks are really gelling tonight.

Woah. Nate has a 48 inch vertical jump. Wish I could jump like that. Hell I'd be happy if I could jump more than 3 inches.

Edit 2- Wow that shot by Marbury at the half-time buzzer was awesome. 53-52 at halftime. Pierce is carrying the Celtics with 21 points.

I watched the Nuggets Spurs game last night. Carmelo was a beast in the 4th quarter, but the Spurs are awesome.

Watching my Bulls, losing 49-33 in the 2nd.

Good ol' Knick defense seems to be making a triumphant return. It's been close the whole game, but the Knicks have outplayed the Celtics tonight and should not be down by 1 right now. Wish we could rebound or play D.

Edit- Antonio Davis with a turnaround jumper with 2.6 seconds left.
w00t

But then Marbury stole the Celtics long pass and decided to heave it across the court when he had timeout left. Probably wouldn't have made any difference if he called timeout though. We're going to overtime.

Knicks getting murdered in overtime...

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

We still can't play defense, we still turn over the ball, and for the love of God will we ever be able to rebound or make free throws?

10 bench points = :-\

Also, I'm going to enjoy rooting against the Lakers this year, but it's Phil Jackson who I hope fails rather than Kobe Bryant.

Why Phil?

I can't stand Kobe. He's probably the biggest baby in American sports.

Phil is a good coach. I saw Red Auerbach on SC last night and he said Phil is good, but has always picked his spots. He said back in the day, he didn't pick his spots. And that's the difference between him and Phil. He's always talking crap. And Red has been a Celtic all his life. I would say that is picking your spot, as well. Phil takes shaky teams and cultivates their potential. And some great players and teams have come out of it. Would Micheal of been the exact same player without Phil? The Bulls the same team? Nope. Same goes for Kobe and the Lakers. And now he's back for another challenge. My hat is off to him.

The Lakers won a game last night that last season they would of certainly lost. That's Phil at work.

EDIT: LeBron James is the new Micheal. If not exactly.

Bulls win in overtime. 25 point deficit in the 4th, came back to win it. That was the best game ever. Wow

Q: "Why Phil?"
A: Because he is a fraud, a hypocrite, and a bigot. He wrote an inflammatory and dehumanizing book about Kobe and the Lakers, then came back to them for a fat paycheck and pretended that everything was cool.

One year after Shaq redirected his life and career out of loyalty to Phil, Phil went and stabbed him in the back for $30 million.

His comments on the "hip-hop" culture were absurd and downright racist:

"I don't mean to say [that] as a snide remark toward a certain population in our society, but they have a limitation of their attention span, a lot of it probably due to too much rap music going in their ears and coming out their being."

-- October 1999, after the Lakers showed some trouble adjusting to the Triangle Offense

"I think it's important that the players take their end of it, get out of the prison garb and the thuggery aspect of basketball that has come along with hip-hop music in the last seven or eight years."

-- October 2005, on the dress code

He was once a member of a controversial culture of himself; the anti-establishment hippie movement, and now he chooses to take ugly potshots at a new culture that is rapidly growing. People in glass houses, Phil. And for all his Zen liberal open-mindedness, he slams a music genre and culture that he clearly knows absolutely nothing about. Clearly hip-hop has its good sides and its bad sides, but Phil will hear nothing of it, rather choosing to blame it for his complete and utter lack of understanding and compassion for the players he works with.

I hope you understand how I feel.

Being good players hasn't won many supporters for Kobe Bryant, Barry Bonds, or Terrell Owens, has it?

And Jackson has done far worse than them, and most of the players the sports media tends to slam incessantly (except for Kobe's little tryst with the white girl in Colorado of course).

But who's the biggest rapper? Eminem. The hip hop culture goes beyond just black guys now, as lots of white guys embrace the same thing.

Now, I agree with you for the most part beyond that, particularly your point about Phil Jackson and Shaq. PJ looks like a major hypocrite coming back to the Lakers after writing his book...I wonder if zen philosophy teaches to seek out contracts at the point of being a hypocrite...

And yeah, Darko got 8 minutes...hopefully that gets up to 15 in a few games, once he gets used to actually playing in games

Ugggggh Barry Bonds...he's the modern Ty Cobb. Owens is a bit of a jerk, but is harmless, really.

Phil Jackson was not referring to the Chris Mihms, Brent Barrys, and Brian Cardinals of the NBA when he said those things.

Oh, he must have had White Chocolate on his mind as well. But on the whole, most of the players in the NBA, as well as most of this country's hip-hop fans, are black, and we can nitpick all we want, but Phil Jackson was definitely referring to them.
