theyre a rock band. possibly an alternative band. alternative is such a cop-out blanket genre though. its a catch all. theyre definitely not funk. they have funk elements. its different.

One member can't define the genre of a band. I am a huge funk lover, my tastes ranging from the classic old school stuff, even back to motown, all the way up to some of the modern hip hop, fusion, groove bands, etc. And, from everything I've heard of the Chili Peppers, they are not funk. Yes, they have some funky elements and a few funky songs, but they are still definatley a rock band.

They don't fall under one specific genre because so many of their songs sound completely different. The album Freaky Styley, produced by George Clinton, is definately funk, but the abum By the Way is pop/rock. It's pretty much impossible to say that they are strictly a funk band or strictly a rock band.

Red Hot Chili Peppers are just Red Hot Chili Peppers, a new genre :P No, I think it's rock with a little bit of Funk (Flea) but that doesn't mean it IS funk.

Flea isn't the only person in the band who plays funk. "Funky Monks" is a good example; John Frusciante and Chad Smith are playing more funky than Flea. |

They are many genres molded into one. You say RHCP are funk, others will say they're alt. rock. Some will say funk rock. Some will go as far as funk metal. Others will classify them as pop.
They are influenced by jazz and funk. Influence only, they are not funk in itself. They are the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and if you were to throw them into one major genre, it would most definately be rock. Yes, they have the funky tracks, and they have the rock tracks, and they have the pop tracks and whatnot...but let's think about all the other bands that would be labelled "funk" by the style used by the bassist, as you've mentioned, Flea: -Audioslave -Primus -Korn, so help me God -Rage Against the Machine -Les Claypool's Frog Brigade I wouldn't list a single one of them as pure funk, just as I wouldn't dare to throw the Chilis into that genre. I'll stick with rock. |

omg Bob Marley has funky bass lines in his songs, so I'd say he should be classified as funk.
Better yet, listen to the music as a collective whole. RHCP isn't funk, plain and simple. |

^Not in recent years, that's for sure... but Freakey Styley was most definitely a funk album. Maybe the only one that they ever issued.

YES! Finally someone speaks truth. None of this "funk Element" bull*h*t. George Clinton Produced that album and squeezed every funky sound out and jammed it up your eardrums like bananas. |

Either way, it's a good thing no one can agree one what genre they are. If they wanted to play funk like Parliament they could, and if they wanted to play rock like Led Zeppelin they could do that too.
