Review of B.C Rich Innovator

B.C Rich basses tend to get quite a lot of bashing around here, but there are actually no reviews at all about them, so I figured I should review my 2003 B.C Rich 4 string Innovator Bass. plus, seeing Foxfire's awesome review made me wanna do one on my bass.

I’ve had it for almost a year now, and I must say, overall it is a pretty good bass.

Sound:

It comes with two passive EMG-Hz pickups and active electronics. With both pickups blended it has a warm and deep sound, with a crisp high end. Soloing the neck pickup makes it sound almost as a p-bass, but with a little less midrange presence. The bridge pup is a little thin sounding, although it is pretty good when you want to cut through a multi instrument band.

All in all, this is a very versatile bass, with the ability to sound almost like Flea (although I haven’t been able to get his growl) to fat p-bass style tone. If you play jazz, this bass lacks the mwahh and woody tones you need for that stuff.

It has great sustain, and it’s easy to produce harmonics, but it ain’t so good for tapping….although it may be due to my poor tapping abilities.

I almost forgot, this bass sounds like a beast when pick played.

Rate: 8/10 (due to the bridge pickup)

If you wish to hear the bass, here's my soundclick (Listen to bass tests, Pepe or Calmadita, the others are played with another bass)

http://www.soundclick.com/bands/3/nisakss_music.htm

Playability:

The neck is very comfortable, I’ve played some high-end Ibanez basses (mainly the SRX 805) and this bass is just as comfortable. It is very well balanced, and there’s no neck dive whatsoever. It is very comfortable when played sited. My only complaints are the fret markers, it has no fret mark for the 24, which gets me lost sometimes.

The bass came very well set-up from the factory.

Rating: 9/10

Durability:

As I said I’ve owned it for over year now, and I’ve taken it to numerous gigs and long car trips to farms, and I haven’t had the slightest problem with it, and it has sustained no damage to the wood, in spite of my best efforts to damage it.( for example, carrying it around without a hard or soft case.)

Don’t know where to put this, or if it is relevant, but the battery lasts a lot, round six months playing an average of 1 hour per day.

Rating: 10/10

Thanks, that was the whole purpose of this thread. As far as I know I'm the only owner of a B.C Rich round here, but everybody just seems to hate them.

They just hate the Beast, and Warlock versions. B.C. Rich is only known for their metal "novelty."

The last decade of BC Rich just sucks, sans the Innovator's, but the 80's BC's are where it's at. I mean... go watch Spinal Tap... those are some fine BC Rich's, and they're actually really great.

^I agree. The B.C. Rich guitars of the 80's actually are quite impressive.

Your not the only one with a BC Rich my friend...

I've got an 82' BC Rich Iron Bird NJ Series ... dont care much for the sounds, and the paint job on it is custom, and not done well.. im having trouble's with a POT on it too, it was gritty and over turned... i checked it out and now i cant get the POT back in place??? i might need to take it to a pro or something..

Great review, awesome looking bass. Hopefully lots of people will look at this and have their eyes opened, because B.C. Rich are still making quality instruments, like you said.
