It wasn't exactly a sex scene or anything, the crew members (husband and wife) had a shower together and then 10 seconds later they got eviscerated

the original alien had a clearly defined and perfectly executed tone of being abandoned with a minotaur in a labyrinth and it was great. the other ones all stuck to the same idea to varying degrees of success. now they're bringing in these elements that clash really hard - swashbuckling heroism, theatrical camp and the punitive sadism of slasher movies. it doesn't work. i like the idea of the plot going in the direction it's going but the tone is all over the place and the script is plummeting through a forest canopy of hairy dicks sucking as much as it can on the way down

i might like it more as time goes on. i definitely found it more fun than prometheus and there was nothing quite as annoying as charlize theron's death in that movie. i just think fundamentally the cast was really weak and the perfunctory way the aliens (of all types) were integrated into the plot didn't do them justice

I actually liked the more Prometheus-like elements and even though there were some tonal cashes I found it to be a thoroughly entertaining film. The flute scene between David and Walter was fantastic and I loved the design of the neomorph. That back-burster scene was fantastic too, loved the use of practical effects. The script was pretentious at times but much less than that of Prometheus.

The one frustrating thing was the stupidity of the humans, especially when they arrived on the planet without wearing suits and stepping on everything without considering that maybe this alien planet wasn't safe. Also when the guy went for a cigarette I whispered to my friend "I'll be right back", it was ridiculous. As soon as David cut his hair I knew what was coming from a mile off.

yeah i haven't seen a movie give less fucks about establishing suspension of disbelief for the likelihood of earth like planets in a while. there's a general failure to have the cast respond to the extraordinary circumstances appropriately. like that scene where the main chick is scrambling some eggs towards the end. i haven't seen a more incongruous bit of post-trauma joviality since the ending of taken 2. that and the shower scene come together and it was just maddening.

i am so tired of horror movies punishing beautiful unsuspecting people for having sex. it fits structurally into like a zombie movie or something where the victims are titillated by doing something transgressive in a situation they would reasonably expect to be safe. but there is no irony in it in this movie. it just signals humourlessly that they are going to die. i think with all the best horror movies there is some actual meaning and impact to the deaths of the characters.
