I personally find Boyhood to be completely and totally overrated.

what criteria do you use to judge a film?

Well personally I have nothing wrong if a movie runs long while remaining captivating. However, during the course of Boyhood's 2 hour+ run, I felt bored and completely uninterested in what was happening.

The concept behind it (literally filming the cast as they grow up) is enough to rope people in and convince them they're in for the film of the ages. But nothing really happens with any sort of coherency. Mason is raised by the typical strong single mom (admittedly performed well, albeit being in a stereotypical role) and just have events happen to him.

He gets in to photography. He gets a job. He dates someone. He drinks and does drugs. He is antisocial. He has a bunch of anti-21st-century ideology. Why does this happen? No clue. It just happens. Not to mention his acting is incredibly wooden and uninspiring, lacking any good character, personality, or delivery. His sister, hardly seen at all, is also a stereotypical younger sister role.

Don't even get me started on the ending. It was abysmal. It left an already dull film with little to no resolution somehow tack on even LESS resolution.

A lot of people are thrilled with it, but there are others like me who simply don't understand. To each their own.

It's an entirely uninspiring and uninteresting point.

I'm of the opinion that movies are a detachment from reality, even when basing off of it. Boyhood just takes random life events, sticks them in chronological order, and lets the camera roll. It's dull and tedious through and through.

Reality itself is more engaging than watching this film.

the sister is his older sister.
the ending was great cos it summed up the whole thing. life is moments but moments that capture you and not the other way around (photography).
the whole idea of the filming as growing up was magical and it was crazy to see.
and it's a coming-of-age film, where nothing 'specific' has to happen, just an insight into a life and certain events that may shape someone.

Others find it beautiful, I find it an over-hyped concept with no substance, message, or anything interesting. One of the worst films I've seen.

that settles it then!

you shouldn't judge a film on what other's think of it. using 'over-hyped' as a reason for not liking it is a bit weird. surely loads of people must like it for a reason? no message? perhaps not? do films need a message to be good?

i just wanna discuss thoughts i hardly see films so maybe i am just uncultured but still i thought it was a very well executed film. must have been a massive investment hoping the guy didn't drop out halfway through!

I feel like it was built up to be more than just life, and a true coming-of-age story that would work out well. So in this case I find the over-excitement to be a detrimental factor to the film.
