sofia coppolas most ambitious film has moments of brilliance interlaced with ones of disappointment. yeah lost in translation and the virgin suicides are better than this but this could have been so much more. it's fine, but doesn't do much.

Methinks the movie was pretty, but sucked completely.

I recall someone here once commenting how much of a badass Peck was. I agree. Pretty awesome film. Rural/suburban depression-era America looked the shiznizzle, loved the feel. Great performances all around, especially from the children.

Makes me want to re-read the novel.

Yes, she is as annoying, or "nearly insufferable" as another poster put her, as the picture and title would lead one to believe. However, if you can get past her glaring personality flaw, and it is just that, a flaw, you might be able to appreciate the story of a plucky woman who discovers, though perhaps not as much as most would like, that she cannot change everything with just a positive attitude.

7/10

That's typical for Gregory Peck.

There wasn't really much of a thought process. I just don't see how anyone who watches Psycho these days could find it scary, that's all.

And there's a difference between horror and torture. Eli Roth and typically slasher movies aren't scary either.

Psycho is a 'suspense/thriller' genre film.

Which doesn't necessarily mean it's scary.

IMDB calls it Horror/Thriller, which is its intention (and it was horrifying to those who saw it in 1960), but the horror is lost these days.

It's suspenseful, but not scary.

Why do you keep saying "these days" as if our perception of horror has to match whatever is currently marketed? Yeah, I find Psycho and Rear Window a hell of a lot scarier than most modern films because it actually uses style and suspense well to draw that horror out. I'm not jump-out-of-my-seat scared but I'd much rather be tested throughout a film than get my heart racing for about a second.

Call that a generational change in tastes. And why apply your own standard to the universe for?

Psycho is kinda freaky. Not so much Rear Window. The only movies that scare me at all are ones that use atmosphere effectively, especially in terms of cinematography and sound. The Shining comes to mind quite quickly when thinking about what movies truly creep me out.

I over-generalize. I find them suspenseful, not scary. Most of my friends find them suspenseful, not scary. The only people I have met that find them scary are people I know from older generations. I shouldn't have over-generalized.

And I think it's a fair stereotype. Old horror movies these days are often considered cheesy because the effects are so bad and the technique has been advanced or whatnot. I do not under any circumstance think that's why I don't find Psycho scary.

I found Rear Window pretty horrific and tense though. It could be party that in my opinion Rear Window is just a better movie. It wasn't as horrifying but the tension was drawn out much better and the style was more intrusive and frightening than Psycho. Just IMO.

You're right though. the market these days is to scare the hell out of people for a heartbeat and then drag them back into no plot, which isn't really something that appeals to me either.

I have yet to see a movie that creeps me out more than The Shining. I haven't seen The Exorcist yet (which I've heard is much scarier?).

Calm the fuck down. To paraphrase "find it scary", I meant that if you thought it was scary - nothing else. I said there was nothing special about the thought process. If the movie had an effect on you that the director was intending, then more power to you. It didn't have that effect on me.
