Lesson and Proof.

Just know, i decided to learn fill at 1:22 of the song "Know One Knows" By QOTSA, in my eyes, its one of Grohls best fills and is excellent practice.

The fill is based on a triplet.

R L R

But there is 4 notes.

So its RlR L.

Seems simple, but its very difficult to get the correct feel of the fill. It swings yet seems straight, hard to explain, but when you hear it you'll understand.

Your right hand has to be pretty dialled for this one, seeing as it is a double with a left in the middle of it, good practice is to do R R L to a click.

The speed of the fill is 165 BPM.

I started at 100, doing R L R L R L R L R L R L RlR L RlR L RlR L RlR L

Bold = snare, normal = high tom

I would do it for about 2 minutes each time and then moved up 5bpm. This made sure the feel and sticking was perfect when it came to the faster tempos where i didnt have time to think about the "space" between notes etc.

Just thought id show you how i go about learning fills (how i do it now anyway). Its a slow process but now i can do that fill on the spot at any speed under 170, the 165 is a comfortable speed for me, so the 170 would be pushing it.

Go try it, use a click and have the bass on every click and get the chops out!

Billy Cobham used that fill quite alot, and you'll also find it used in AAF's version of smooth criminal.

Something akin to a Herta...

See how knowing those rudiments comes in handy. Excellent method of learning a lick as well. Now I'd suggest tweaking it to make it your own.
