What's the keyboardist's choice for an amplifier?

I'm not really familiar with them, but I think rolland makes pretty good keyboard amplifiers. Check out musicians friend.com also, thier reviews on gear are pretty extensive.

I don't recommend an amp for a keyboard.

You can use studio monitors at home, but for clubs you need an amplifier, I think. I used a Bruce bass amp at one point (still in my mother's garage) and a Peavey six-channel mixer/amp (stolen from my apartment as I slept) connected to bass speakers at another point. I recently bought a pair of Edirol MA 20D studio monitors, and they're awful.

That's wha tthe PA is for. The keyboard player in my last band had a 18 channel EV/Tapco mixer into a Crown power Amp into 2 EV SX100 cabs. So he just ended up doing the rough mix on vocals and keys on his mixer when we practiced.

If we did a gig with no PA support, we all used his rig. If we had support, he only used his mixer for the keys and sent a single stereo pair to the house mixer in stead of two channels per keyboard.

Pro: It's a great way to work everything, very versatile

Con: Expensive as all get out, seriously. He probably had $6500 in his rig. Not so scary, you say? This was in 1988 dollars.

Eighteen channels? I never even used all of my six. Originally I bought a four-channel, but I took it back because I needed more wattage.
