Golf - a sport?

Time to settle this once and for all. It can be played in dress clothes, and yet you can pull just about every muscle in your body doing it. You can walk up to 6 miles in one day, or you can take the car. You can drag around a heavy bag, or you can hire someone to do it for you.

I say it's a game, but a rather sport-ish one.

Discuss.

Hobby/game, Not a sport, the only real sports are where you get hurt.

They walk around in goofy pants and wack balls

My Bro and I decided that it was. First off, in the PGA, you can't take the cart, you have to walk. But other than that, it takes physical ability and you compete.

Of course it is a sport. It can be played as a hobby of course, but apar from that it is definetly a sport. It is one the highest paid sports in the world, so you cannot call that a hobby. Also it requires a unique skill and talent to make it as a profession, and it is very popular around the world. Threadstarter you are a disgrace for raising this issue. If golf isn't a sport, nor are sports like snooker, tennis, athletics or cricket etc.

Nice sarcasm... right?

Since when is snooker a sport? And why wouldn't cricket (actually involving reflexes, strategy, and running) or athletics be a sport?

Oh, so golf doesn't involves stategy does it? Just because you run in cricket, that doesn't make it a sport. A sport is a sponsored activity that attracts alot of public interest, and golf does just as much as cricket. Golf requires alot of good technique, timing, thinking and patience, just like cricket. So the mentallity of the two sports isn't that much difference, actually.

And about snooker, it is a sport but just a not as well sponsored, so it doesn't attract as much interest, that is why everyone hates it. Plus it is a bit boring, but then again, people say cricket it aswell...

I actually have a tough time with this one. Golf is kind of inbetween because I think it can be looked at as a leisure/hobby/game in the same sence as Poker for example but it does have a physical aspect to it as well so I'm undecided.

It's a game, because how well your opponent does has no effect on your own performance.

well actually its not quite that simple... it depends on who's playing. for someone who has a specific idea that sports involve two teams and contact it probably would be consider a sport, but for someone who doesn't get much excersize and sees the competitive aspect of golf its more of a sport... and for me it takes too much concentration for no extra perscriptions to ritalin

I hardly think thats the criteria for a sport, then you would have to disclude all track and field events, swimming, cycling, etc...

But what the **** is the difference between a sport and a game anyways? Hockey is a sport but is also a game, same goes for any other sport, they're all games!! You go to watch a baseball GAME, a football GAME, hence why I think this argument is retarded... A better question to ask would be whether you consider it a sport or not, and to answer that, I would definately consider it a sport. It requires mental AND physical skill, like any other sport, so how is this any different??

To the guy who said "it's sponsored" - so? If you invest in something, it changes its athletic status? If Superbowl ads stopped fetching 1 million dollars per 20 seconds, football wouldn't be a sport anymore?

To the guy who said you compete against an opponent - you do that in video games. Video games also require coordination and skill.
