Instrument Mics

I'm looking to purchase a good mic for recording guitar and bass amps. Heres two i found, anyone have any comments on the two? or can suggest other mics to check out?

I suggest Shure beta SM-57

great, inexpensive, versatile

Seconded. Shure SM-57s are the industry standard mic for recording guitar and bass.

Shure is a great product, but also make sure you get good, clean cords or you'll lose some major quality.

100 dollars? once again, the british get a raw deal on mics- we'd pay at least £10 more than that I think.

try using the sm57 up close and a samson co3 a few meters back. they work well with each other

A really good bass amp for the $ is the Fender Rumble 100W. Our basist has it and it has a killer sound. AND IT COMES IN A BOX!!!

Ok, OCD is onto something with this. I realize that you already have stuff set up fitz, but for anyone else who reads this there is a good way to avoid purchasing recording mics.

Make sure your vocalist/singer person buys a PA and some speakers as well as a recording station. This will allow everyone (except percussionists with acoustic sets) to play directly into the recording station through the PA. Another alternative is to make sure everyone's amp has an XLR output that can go directly into a PA or a mixer for even better sound quality.

Failing that, purchase Sure SM 57s and set them a little off center of the cone for each person's amp. Thats the sweet spot for micing. Directly in front of the cone will get a really terrible fat sound that is no fun to listen to.
