MIDI question
I was wondering if there was any way to use the standard keyboard as a MIDI controller, i know that would bastardize the idea, but i just dont have the money to buy a midi controller at the moment...

There should be MIDI Input/Outputs on your keyboard.

Almost every decent full-size keyboard will have a midi out, and the better ones will have In, out and thru
So unless your keyboard is a crappy mini-casio or something, or really old and cheap (most of those Yamaha psr efforts with 100 sounds and 100 beats fit there)... Just look on the back of your keyboard, and if it has a midi out, all you need is a midi cable and a soundcare capable of midi to plug it into your computer. All a there is no difference between a midi-controller, and a kerboard with midi out in 90% of cases, appart from the fact a controller has no sounds built in, so NEEDS a midi rack/software to make any sound... But if you intend to use the sounds on a computer, then a cheat keyboard with velocity sensing (touch sensitive) will do, a mod wheel is always nice, but never NEEDED... For software to use with a midi keyboard, I would 100% recomend Proppellerheads Reason 2.5 most think of it as a dance/electronic program, but I have used it for jazz, classical, rock, all sorts of music, with great results. |

Another question
Can somebody tell me, does a MIDI controller(esp. Roland AX-7) actually function by itself? I'd like to know before I pay 400 bucks for one. If not, what else would I need for it to function?

I think what he's referring to is the computer keyboard. Try doing a google search for "virtual midi keyboard"
