How do you know, have you ever heard him play. You can only judge by how he wrote down his music, the guy couldn't even hear what he was writing in the end. He could have been about as good as you or me with the piano but an expert with a pen. You just don't know.

Beethoven is nice. Though I will scream if anyone plays the short version of Fur Elise ever again.
I rate Chopin higher though. |

I think i may have touched a nerve with the 'you've never heard him play' stuff. BUt it's true, there is not a man alive that has heard rudess play and beethoven play. Alright they are totally different styles but Rudess may own Beethoven completeley. I mean how can a man that's deaf play a musical instrument, it is ALL about how it sounds. I was just making a point.

He wasn't deaf his whole life, you know. And it wouldn't make much sense to compare him and Rudess, seeing as their styles, and the periods in which they play, are so different from each other. |

Meh I know but I'm not too into Classical stuff, so i wouldn't know any pianists of that style today. He was starting to go deaf later in life and for that reason pianos were built stronger to sound louder. My point is he could have been sloppy compared to some of the greats today. Raving about his piano skills seem slightly pointless. Talk about his pen not about his playing.

I personally prefer Rachmaninoff... I haven't matured much in my taste yet

I lOVE Rachmaninoff. Also Liszt. Liszt was a great improvisor. So was Chopin. Most of their music was made at the piano. While, Beethoven didn't most of the time. Beethoven, however, is EXCELLENT. He had passion, love of music, and I don't know anyone who dislikes his sonatas. Also, have you heard the Emperor Concerto (of course you have) especially the second movement. There is something about that which is moving to me. Beethoven has a way of leaving you completely satisfied after one of his songs. Also, Deafness wouldn't really ever deter his compositions. All the composers were taught perfect pitch, so he could here what was on the page in his head. Maybe everyone all ready knew that, but it doesn't seem so. I was never impressed by him being deaf because its not like he could have a symphony there playing what he wrote as he wrote it in the first place. It never detterred him. He got so angry because he wanted to hear music, not just in his head. But anyways, Beethoven rocks. His sonatas explore many emotions. They are furious, and prayfull. They are happy and said. They are love stories, and songs of the fate of death. They are really good.
