How do you know, have you ever heard him play. You can only judge by how he wrote down his music, the guy couldn't even hear what he was writing in the end. He could have been about as good as you or me with the piano but an expert with a pen. You just don't know.

Actually, I'm better than Beethoven will ever be. Even you are. He's dead.

No no, none of us here are as good as Beethoven was. He was as good as his pen at least.

He was reputed to be a brilliant improviser, and in the day concerts featuring Beethoven's composed music would often also include Beethoven's improvisation.

Beethoven is nice. Though I will scream if anyone plays the short version of Fur Elise ever again.

I rate Chopin higher though.

I actually learned that when I was about 8, before finally learning the real one.

Personally, I prefer Chopin's music as well, especially his piano music. However, I think in terms of what they achieved as composers, and in the impact they both had on music, it would be fair to say that Beethoven was ahead in most regards.

I think i may have touched a nerve with the 'you've never heard him play' stuff. BUt it's true, there is not a man alive that has heard rudess play and beethoven play. Alright they are totally different styles but Rudess may own Beethoven completeley. I mean how can a man that's deaf play a musical instrument, it is ALL about how it sounds. I was just making a point.

I got the shorter version around that age as well. I grew tired of it after hearing my peers play it 982594 times by the time I hit 11. Now, none of them play the long version :-/

He wasn't deaf his whole life, you know. And it wouldn't make much sense to compare him and Rudess, seeing as their styles, and the periods in which they play, are so different from each other.

Meh I know but I'm not too into Classical stuff, so i wouldn't know any pianists of that style today. He was starting to go deaf later in life and for that reason pianos were built stronger to sound louder. My point is he could have been sloppy compared to some of the greats today. Raving about his piano skills seem slightly pointless. Talk about his pen not about his playing.

Very clumsily. We don't just know Beethoven as a composer. We also know him from his reputation as a great pianist and brilliant improvisor. You'd might as well tell us there's not a man (or woman) alive who's seen Beethoven and ask us how we can then maintain that he actually ever lived.

And, for that matter, he never went completely deaf.

I lOVE Rachmaninoff. Also Liszt. Liszt was a great improvisor. So was Chopin. Most of their music was made at the piano. While, Beethoven didn't most of the time. Beethoven, however, is EXCELLENT. He had passion, love of music, and I don't know anyone who dislikes his sonatas. Also, have you heard the Emperor Concerto (of course you have) especially the second movement. There is something about that which is moving to me. Beethoven has a way of leaving you completely satisfied after one of his songs. Also, Deafness wouldn't really ever deter his compositions. All the composers were taught perfect pitch, so he could here what was on the page in his head. Maybe everyone all ready knew that, but it doesn't seem so. I was never impressed by him being deaf because its not like he could have a symphony there playing what he wrote as he wrote it in the first place. It never detterred him. He got so angry because he wanted to hear music, not just in his head. But anyways, Beethoven rocks. His sonatas explore many emotions. They are furious, and prayfull. They are happy and said. They are love stories, and songs of the fate of death. They are really good.

Actually, deaf people can "hear" music in a different way than other people can, but they still hear it. Sound is made in waves and vibrations, and so those vibrations can translate to sound for them. Watch "Mr. Holland's Opus" it orta addresses that issue
