Aziza Mustafa Zadeh!

Anyone knows this amazing jazz pianist/composer/singer from Azerbijan?! I think she is one of the most innovative musicians in the last couple of decades. Aziza lives in gemany i think, and she recorded her albums accompanied by greats such as Al Di Meola, Bill Evans and John Pattituci amongst many others! My favourite albums by her are Dance of Fire, Always and Jazziza.
This is a true legend in the making! check her out, and if you know her, tell me what you think!

Aziz shes the best OMG i finally found someone who knows her

I've been in love with Aziza's work for years now! i even got to know some of my favourite jazz musicians through their work on her album such as Stanely Clarke on Dance of Fine, John Patitucci on Always not to mention the beautiful guitar work by Al DI Meola on Dance of Fire!
I was surprised that very few people seem to have heard of her here, I guess a lot of the music made in europe never makes it all the way to the US, im glad there is someone out there though!
What worries me is that it has been years since her last album, and i dont know whether she is still touring or what is her story! do let me know if you know anything!

oh man oh man - i guess her last cd was in 2002 - but after that ? not that i know of
well u say that european work does not reach america that easy
well i live in Egypt - Africa - so i guess u know how much do i suffer
i searched allover here for aziza's albums but it was nopthing in the end
i wannit to cry sometimes lol oh tell me what i do am dying to listen to her music
but thank god i did download things for her lik 20 songs or sth
OMG did u listen to Passion ohhh thats not a song thats a real symphony shes irresistable really

my fav are Endless Power - Always - Passion - Yandi Ganim Daha - Take 5ive and everything everthing really

Ahh! well, I dont even bother to look for albums by Aziza or almost anyone where i live! I am from Amman, to the point that the last album i got by her was Always and i thought it was the last she did until now! there is vertualy no market for jazz here therefore almost no store gets it, so i get most of my music through downloading, from friends in Europe and the US and from Beirut when i get to go there!
Actualy my band is pretty much the only band the can be considered a Jazz band this side of the river!

I was eight-months-old at the time, just a baby really. Once, my father was improvising at the piano playing in the mugam mode known as "Shur," which creates a mood that evokes very deep, sad emotions. As my father was playing, I started to cry. Everyone wondered what was happening to me. Why was I crying? And then mother realized the correlation between my feelings and the music. "Vagif, please," she told my father, "change the scale. Go to 'Rast.' Play 'Rast.'" And he did. Now 'Rast' is characterized by its joyfulness and optimism. And sure enough, with tears still running down my cheeks, I started to make dance-like movements. And Mom pointed out, "Look, look what she's doing! Change back to 'Shur!'" And when he did, I started crying again louder than before. Back to "Rast," and I began dancing again....

It seems [my father] hadn't been feeling well, and doctors cautioned him not to play. But he insisted, "No, I must play." And he gave a superb concert, although not many people filled the great hall. It was a special Muslim religious day there-the day of Ashura Hussein when men march in the streets and beat themselves in commemoration of the death of Hussein, the third Shiite Imam. After my father finished the concert, he had a severe heart attack and died. He was only 39.

Why was his concert scheduled on that day? Because of the stupid Soviet system. They were always doing things completely wrong. I can't understand this old system. It broke the lives and hearts and careers of so many people. My father used to receive so many invitations from abroad inviting him to participate in different international festivals in America, in Europe-everywhere. Once he was invited to Finland to participate in a jazz festival, but a few minutes before the plane was to take off, someone called, "Mr. Zadeh, Vagif Zadeh, please return. Someone is waiting for you." And he went to see what was happening, and they wouldn't allow him back on the plane. It was a ploy to keep him from going abroad.

I've just now learned that a few months ago some women in Azerbaijan's Parliament were raising quite a fuss about the cover of my latest CD-the one called "Seventh Truth." You'll have to see it. They criticize me for being naked on the cover. But I'm not really naked at all. Actually, you don't see anything. Just skin, nothing more. Actually, I find it amusing! Why all the fuss? Maybe some women are jealous, or maybe they're too fat to appear like that themselves.

What do I do in my leisure? I love to sleep. Maybe it's because I usually sleep so poorly and so little. I wish it were possible to sleep on a cloud. That's what I wish I could do-sleep on a cloud!

I think Azerbaijan has a great future because Azerbaijanis deserve it. Don't you think that Azerbaijanis deserve to be happy? I truly believe that the future will be bright for Azerbaijan. I have a highly developed sense of intuition that makes me feel that way. And I have dreams. And most of my dreams come true. For example, there have been times when I sensed dangerous situations beforehand, and I've called and warned people about them. "Please don't go out, or don't drive your car on Thursday at 6:30 p.m." Sometimes, I see people smiling and speaking very warmly to me, but then when I see their auras, I realize they are completely different.

Thanks ned, i've read this interwiew a few times since its pretty much the only semi-worthy thing you can find about here online...she sounds a bit like a nutcase! but she is surely a great musician! I guess one needs to be a bit out of it to come up with something as good!

Sure i can send you some, I have her first album, Aziza Mustafa Zadeh, then i have Dance of Fire, Jazziza and Always, with the exception of the Jazziza the other three albums are mostly instrumental...so what would you like? and how do you think i can send them?
As for downloading there isnt that much as far as i know, i found some songs on Kazaa but that dont work so well anymore...
Most of her albums are available on Amazon, and in Beirut if you ever happen to swing by there too!

Oh my - first of all i want Always the song and by the way its not aziza's its her father's but she plays it just perfect - and its fine with me send any i wont say no - and i know that dance of fire is her best - and i have only "passion" from that album so i want u to send me anything anything or if u know links where i can download .

You can listen to about dozen of her tracks as well as other jazz musicians from Azerbaijan. Pay special attention to the music of her father, Vagif Mustafazadeh (he was THE GENIUS!), and make a note of this young guy Shahin Novrasli. He has a great future!

And her name is weird, because Mustafa is a male name. I always thought of her as male, until I realized that it was her on the cover.. oh well....

She is really brillint. vocal range and talent is fascinating. And the musicians she worked with are worth worshiping

Yeah my father had the same mistake in the record store as he told me he first listened to her performance on TV and all he could catch as a name was "mustafa".


btw there is another artist that goes with piano and vocal only, Regina Spektor. Not the same kind of music but spektor is quite enjoyable to listen, though. spektor's music is much more "American", i mean like blues, and she has clever & sometimes funny lyrics. Not relevant to the topic but i wanted to pop it up :P
