Extremely Weird Question About Chord Voicings/Murder Mysteries

You guys know in classic murder mysteries when the private eye finds a clue and it makes this clean tone chord that sort of suggests mystery? Well, to me it sounds like an augmented chord, but when I try to replicate it on my guitar (as I play guitar and not piano) it sounds incredibly awkward. Most of the were originally plucked on a harp or played on a piano so I'm assuming this is the right place to ask. I'm guessing the chord is either inverted in some way that just isn't making sense to me right now. hm, i'm not exactly sure which chord you're talkin about, but .. try a diminished 7th chord?

try a chord with a flatted 5th, or a plain old minor chord.

but i think the faltted 5th is what you're looking for

The flatted fifth just creates a tritone. Diminished 7th ain't quite right either. The search continues.

well i listened to that part of the song and if its the part im thinkin of (3 notes decending into the fuller beat), then all it is is just a simple minor shape, it goes G# E C#, a C# minor shape, maybe its the wrong part cuz on the version i downloaded it happens at 1:05, i dunno, hope that helps

not really answering the question, but i thought i'd be interresting though:

a real mystery/murder/movie chord that i know of:

the minor major 7th (ex. C-maj7: C Eb G B)

or the minor add9 (C-add9: C D Eb G)

very cool chords, kinda scary. i think it's the half tone intervals in the chords, that makes it sound "thriller-like".

the ultimate thriller trick is a half tone interval played on some real hollywood sounding strings. ex: C Db

Thanks Malte. I'm definitely thinking it's some alternation around the Minor Major and an Augmented. Both exhibit those combinations of intervals that give the desired effect.
