These strings are rotosound's flatwound strings, for those who dont know rotosound invented roundwound strings in 1962, so they know their shit.
these strings are made from monel, a special alloy that gives them some brightness. so if you like roundrounds try these, as they aren't comlpletely dark. Yet they are flatwounds so they have a darker deeper, thumpier tone. I bought them to replace the crappy rounds on my squier jazz bass. the tone is much better. the thump and added low end makes playing funk and rock much better. They have higher tension, but its no issue. less string noise too. You can still slap and pop, but you would need to add more high end from the amp or bass eq. These arent realy for the diehard slapper. They come in many guages from light to medium to heavy, 5 string sets to. i got the standard 45-105 i want to try heavier but i need to file the nut a bit.

they are more expensive then rounds, due to the special aloy and more metal in each string. I paid 29 bucks, but is really worth it, they last for years. James Jamerson used the same set of Flatwounds for yeats at a time, he only replaced a string if it broke. So anyway I wont need new strings for a long time. The only negative things i have notice in the 6 months i have had them is that stuff like slap suffers, but when i get my secound bass it will have round wounds, so every range of tones is covered. I highly recomend these strings.

round wounds are made of a round string rapped oround a core, flatwounds, are a flatriboon rapped around a core, the flats have a thumpier tone, less treble, more tension, they last forever, go try some

i had some rotosound flatwounds for some time but prefer the brightness of proper strings. I'd probably have some now though coz i'm more into jazz than when i had them before.

I have tried the Rotosound flatwounds. I was looking for a string that would not chew up the neck on my Sterling fretless. I've always been a preferred Rotosound customer, sticking with the standard scale roundwound's. They are still my favorite. However, the flatwounds, in my opinion, are dull sounding, and the smooth surface actually hampers my dexterity on the fretboard. I tried the GHS pressure wound strings and they are the best that I've tried. Brite flat's are good for mid-tone brightness, however, the grinding of the strings seems to make the surface too smooth and dramatically dull's the sound. I've accepted the fretless bass man's dilemma. Sooner or later the neck will get chewed. For now I will try to minimize the damage and maximize the basses natural sound.

Flatwounds are supposed to sound dull compared to Roundwounds. Thats the point its about thump, not brightness.

hey b+f+a=g do flatwounds hinder your playing of harmonics or are they the same as rounds for harmonics?

harmonics are fine, except flatwounds have less sustain so the harmonics die out slightly quicker, i could post a recording of amazing grace or some harmonics if you want.

Er you can slap on flatwounds and some pros do (not many) but roundwounds sound much better.

ground wounds are just roundwounds poslished down like flats, they are designed so you can play brighter stuff on fretless basses, with out damaging the fretboards. try the rotosound pressure wound strings. they kickass.
