Compare DEP to every genre, grindcore is the genre they are closest to. I'm mean I've heard the term mathcore thrown around with them but it doesn't seem to be sticking. So instead of creating a whole new genre just for them I would say they are.

Hahah, the reason why I would use mathcore because math can get technical, much like their guitar work and core.....well I don't see why not.

Mathmetal*
I dislike all the cores and DEP don't even incorporate hardcore in their music... |

Dillinger definitely has some grind in there. Math Metal/Grindcore just about sums it up I think. Maybe some metal thrown in there.

Ok, this is something that's been annoying me. DEP aren't grind. Grind is pure chaos. Daughters is grind. DEP are way too technical and have too much thought in their music. They're technical metal, or tech for short.

I'm a newbie to the board. But definetely not a newbie to these genres of music.
Dillinger Escape Plan is mathmetal The very first post of this thread addresses some bands that I feel were not classified properly. The first of those is Norma Jean. Their is no technicality to their riffs, so why you even classify them as metal. You yourself said metal had much more technical riffs. Norma Jean is hardcore. They use open and minor 7ths constantly. Another band that I feel was mis-classified was everytime I die. They have spastic riffs that a much more fitting in hardcore not metalcore. There is no real metal to them at all. Same goes for Scarlet. I've seen all three of those bands live. Same goes for Nora. As for metalcore, they are easy to spot. Unearth, As I Lay Dying, Hatebreed(the supposed "creators") Underoath was not metalcore. The best description I've heard for them and that I use for myself is pop metal. After listening to their new cd they definetely fell into the post hardcore category. Where Atreyu would also feel much more at home. Thirty-Called Arson would almost go along with Dillinger in the math metal category if they weren't lacking so much in talent when compared to dillinger. They are easily described as spazcore. I haven't seen anything about the band Zao. It's probably crammed somewhere in the middle. But how can you talk about metal and hardcore and not even mention Zao. They're metalcore. Also, no one said anything about Poison the Well. I'm amazed that neither one of them were mentioned. Poison the Well came about when hardcore just started to get big(1997). That's all I've got for now. Sorry to be a critic. |

norma jean and etid are definately metalcore. hatebreed are nowhere near the creators of metalcore. and if you're saying norma jean aren't metalcore because they don't have technical riffs, why would you say hatebreed are metalcore?
