[post-hardcore/punk/progressive] - Damascus

Ya this is rockin. I did a project for school and it was recording an EP, which I titled "Damascus." I posted the songs on the internet and I think this is a good place to get crits.

It's only 3:52! You're used to listening to the 12 minute long Cicatriz EP buddyo.

I actually liked this alot..its a sweet new sound, a little rough tho. vocals are a little weak, but the lead guitars are pretty good. Im not liking the screaming too much tho. all in all good job, tell your teachers that you deserve an 'A'. Nomad said so.

and if u get a chance, give some feedback on our stuff. Its not great, but its better than before

No. He was the tech man. And he's dead anyway so he doesn't count.

Ya. I wrote everything on the guitar so it's guitar focused and there were no people who could sing available to me. In the end my friend and I just went into the studio and freestyled the melody using the lyrics I wrote. It turned out really well considering it's unrehearsed and we did it all in 2 hours.

Hm. I only like the underground song for some reason. Other songs just need like a stronger vocal expression... dunno how to describe.

[Edit:]I think i pinpointed the problem. Whoever mixed this down wasn't too confident of the vocals, so they mixed them down. Bring them much up.

That edit is pretty astute. I taught my friend the vocals in an hour the night beofre we had two hours to record them. This was for a project so it came down to the wire on the vocals. Also, I wrote all the songs instrumentally and then superimposed the lyrics and vocals. They were customized for the songs they were written for but still, the instrumental component of the music is what I was focused on. These two facts led to the vocal mix being low. I like the mix low and if you listened to any old school emo or screamo you'd be familiar with this style. They loved it because with all the screaming it'd cut through the music instead of smothering it. But ya. Nice comments.

It's sounds like Maynard a little bit because of the distance between the singer and the mic. The way he liked to sing included pulling back away sometimes and it led to him needing to bass out his voice to level those oscillations. I think it sounds neat.
