Your own record label.
Yeah, let's make our own record labels, shall we?
Alright, the most important thing about your label is obviously the name. You can't sell records without a name that sells records. So, make up a good name for your company. Then of course you've got to have bands on the label. You can choose any bands you like, still around or broken up, signed or unsigned. Try to pick bands from the same genre or similar genres (even though you don't have to be too hard about that...). Maybe you'd like a label with only funk, only death-metal or only nu-reggaebased prog-nintendo-core. And then when you've got some bands on your label, then fun begins. You can do a lot with your own record label. Examples: - A tour. What bands are on it? What is it called? etc. - A compilation cd. Pick songs from your bands, yada yada... Maybe all covers? - A split cd. Maybe two of your bands could cover some of each others songs? Maybe all of your bands? - A DVD. What's on it? - A tribute cd. To what band/artist? Your bands could cover songs by that band/arist. - A live CD/DVD. With one band? Maybe with more bands? etc... Be creative, my children! |

Star In Hell Records
Bands: Suburban Legends Big D And The Kids Table The Forces Of Evil Reel Big Fish Streetlight Manifesto Lightyear Shootin Goon King Prawn Mighty Mighty Bosstones The Aquabats The Littlest Man Band NOFX Me First And The Gimme Gimmes Sublime Mad Caddies Chub (my friends’ band, unsigned) That’ll do for now (I’ve probably forgotten some)… Hmmm, a tour, not sure what I would call it, maybe “Slave In Heaven/ Ska In Hell Tour. I’m no good at naming things! I think it would involve the bands that sound kind of similar. I would have a tour of the UK involving Suburban Legends, The Forces Of Evil, Reel Big Fish and The Aquabats. I would have a tour of the US involving the UK bands on my label, Lightyear, Shootin Goon, King Prawn and Chub. Compilation CD: Suburban Legends – I Want More/ Bright Spring Morning/ Up All Night Big D And The Kids Table – Can’t Be Caught/ Find Out/ Myself The Forces Of Evil – Fight/ Mistake/ Vague Love Song Reel Big Fish – Beer/ Sell Out/ Somebody Hates Me Streetlight Manifesto – Everything Went Numb/ Point/Counterpoint/ A Better Place, A Better Time Lightyear – Three Basics/ Trumpet Trousers/ 200 Kebab Shops Shootin Goon – Guestlist*Hitlist/ Every Single Time/ Wage Slave King Prawn – Dominant View/ Not Your Punk/ First Defence Mighty Mighty Bosstones – The Rascal King/ Noise Brigade/ Another Drinkin’ Song The Aquabats – My Skateboard/ Pizza Day/ I Fell Asleep On My Arm The Littlest Man Band – It’s You/ Always Sayin/ Better Man NOFX – All Outta Angst/ Champs Elysees/ Anarchy Camp Me First And The Gimme Gimmes – Crazy/ Sci-Fi Double Feature/ Leaving On A Jet Plane Sublime – Let’s Go Get Stoned/ Date Rape/ Boss D.J. Mad Caddies – Monkeys/ Nobody Wins At The Laundromat/ Rockupation Chub – The Mean Streets/ Walkin’ On Sunshine/ I Don’t Care Split CD: Very different sounding bands, Big D And The Kids Table and Suburban Legends. Tracklisting: Big D And The Kids Table – Me And You Waikiki Autumn In The Park Powerful Game Suburban Legends – Evil Girl/Angry Girl She Won’t Ever Figure It Out Scenester New England Live CD (all covers): Suburban Legends - Ska Sucks Big D And The Kids Table - We Don’t Play Ska Anymore The Forces Of Evil - Skalifornia Reel Big Fish - Brain On Ska Streetlight Manifesto - Thanks For Not Moshing Lightyear - Skank By Numbers Shootin Goon - Hip Ska King Prawn - The Skanking Song Mighty Mighty Bosstones - Fight The Aquabats - Ska Muzik Mad Caddies - Johnny Go Ska I’m not sure about having a live DVD or anything, those things always kind of seem overpriced and I’d rather go to a show. But it would be cool to have merchandise that was home-made, like t shirts that have "I Love Ska" sprayed on with paint. They always look cool Or funny stuff, like trucker hats that say "Kiss Me, I'm Emo" or "Soft Like An Emo"... Yeah.Well there you go, that’s it for now. I'm going to own one for real when I graduate college and all that. It's going to be called Big Break Records, and the logo will a fat man eating a hangurger on a record that is broken in half. Our goal will be to sign promising young bands, put them on tour a lot to get their name out there, and get them ready for larger companies, and we can set them on different "paths" for whether or not they know if they want MTV sort of fame, or if they want non commercial success. I am so excited whenever I think about it.

Yeah, a record company is the only "real" career I've ever actually thought about for after university, but I can't see how it'll happen..unless... *steals Spikey's ideas*
