(Rock) Weezer - Maladroit

Weezer's 4th album is quite possibly their most rockin' to date (pending album #5). The boys from =W= stick to their catchy guitar hooks and harmonies but venture into an uncharacteristic shade of heavier rock for them. Released in May '02, it's become a favorite among Weezer fans although some still regard anything past Pinkerton, Weezer's cult classic 2nd album, to be complete crap.
Rivers and company spare no one from weezer's brand of powerchord heaven. Mixing crunchy distortion with passionate vocals, Weezer rips through 13 tracks in about 35 minutes. Maladroit is a mix of all previous Weezer albums, trademark hooks and emotions.

Track #1 : American Gigolo - Album opener with Pat Wilson's accented drum intro leading to what else, Rivers and Brian kicking it taking no prisoners. Trademark Weezer chorus.

Track #2 : Dope Nose - The 1st single from this album, infectious with an ultra catchy main riff. Add a nice little solo from Rivers and we have a hit.

Track #3 : Keep Fishin' - 2nd single, known for its muppet-esque video, the boys mix good old fashion rock with splendid vocal harmonies.

Track #4 : Take Control - Rivers' standup song, heavy hitting with a crescendo solo.

Track #5 : Death and Destruction - A slower song on the album, quite beautiful with some nice guitar phrases.

Track #6 : Slob - Classic Weezer

Track #7 : Burndt jamb - Clean verses, distorted chorus. Gotta love the backup vocals.

Track #8 : Space Rock - Memories of the green album perhaps?

Track #9 : Slave - Classic Weezer

Track #10 : Fall Together - Crunchy, crunchy guitar with an infectious beat. Rivers decides to go slighty insane on his solo.

Track #11 : Possibilities - upbeat, fast-paced, green album-esque in the pop factor.

Track #12 : Love Explosion - Feel good song with some old school backup vocals (think somewhat Beatles).

Track #13 : December - somewhat slower song, a neat way to end the album.

I too found it to be an awesome Cd. When I first picked it up and listened to it, I only found like 3 songs I liked, and I felt dissapointed. Well, this is a cd that grows on you, all of the songs are awesome, and well put together.

Nah; it was truly an excellent album, nice guitar work, Rivers' singing was top notch and the album did not disappoint. Shows Weezer are still one of the best bands out there.

Weezer has been one of my favorite bands since the blue album came out. Pinkerton was no different. I still have the fan club's lyric sheet for it. After the green album, something didn't seem right. Maladroit was better, but it still wasn't as good as the other stuff before Rivers went J.D. Salinger. The album has some great songs on it but nothing as classic as anything from the first two cds. I honestly hope that their next album will blow me off of my feet like they did before 2001. With Rick Rubin on board, that seems inevitable, but hype can be a bitch.
With that said, I'd give it a 3.5/5 or so.

Maladroit is okay, but it doesn't compare to Blue and Pinkerton.

Green Album sucks.

Take Control has my favorite guitar riff. I can play it now. Take control or Dope Nose is the proably the best song on the ablum.

and Blue is still the best album.

I quite liked Maladroit. Obviously it doesn't touch their earlier stuff, but still a great album.

I think it deserves more than that. And yes, The Green Album is not very good. Check out my review of Pinkerton.

you've got to be kidding, right? this is weezers worst album ever. sure some of their songs are ok, but there is nothing that stands out in my mind as great. the blue cd was their best, and since then they can't make up their minds about what kind of style they want. whats next, rap? this cd sucked, it only deserves one star
