(Contemporary Ska) Distorted Penguins - "Magic"
So yesterday I attended a show entitled "Skanksgiving," where I watched 3 ska bands perform. One band caught my attention the most with their onstage energy and catchy songs, so afterward I bought their CD. Distorted Penguins, from West Virginia are a band that has adopted the typical ska-punk sound, but I think their interpretation of it is very good. Their horn players are quite talented, and play some really neat licks throughout the album. There are some great tunes here, such as "Falling Rock," "Anarchy Waltz," and "Sexi Lexi," but I also find some of them a bit sub-par. Overall, the recording doesn't capture the energy that I enjoyed onstage. If you like ska-punk definitely check them out, but if you're not already a fan of the genre, don't expect them to convert you.
