(Unclassifiable) Muse - Showbiz

Showbiz was the first major offering from the prodigal sons of Cornwall. Matt, Dom and Chris strike a chord with a few alt fans, (and me) and show a lot of folk just exactly how it should be done. However, many ignorant ppl dubbed muse the 'bastard sons of radiohead' after this album. Goodness knows why, as I can only see influence, not downright copying. And the only cover they've done is Feeling good. Which is absoloutely fantastic if you ask me....

Showbiz is a mix of old and new sounds with a wurlitser or two thrown in for good measure. It's not as bold or adventurous as OOS, but this is when they were mere boys in the midst of the fickle music industry.

Songs to look out for are 'Sunburn','Muscle Museum' and 'Unintended' because this is one of the rare times you'll hear them go all soppy on you. Well, they were only young...

Also look out for 'Cave'

5/5

dude
you forget the best of that album: showbiz
that song is one of the best songs of muse

muse is the only band i know who don't have bad songs...
ALL their songs are good

if i compare muse with radiohead...
muse is overall MUCH and MUCH better because they have 2 or 3 songs that suck, and those songs are on this album
they only getting better and better
absolution is the best album of theirs
OOS is their second best album

radiohead have only 5 or 6 good songs

Muse are a great band, and "Unintended" is a fantastic song.

The review is very short...song by song analasys would be better but otherwise its all good. This is still probably my favourite record of theirs...my dad got it around the time it came out and he made me listen to it, and in a way its changed me musicly because my band was just starting out and i played it to them. In the end it ended up most people in my school loved muse, which is a cool thing...escape is a class song

That tag also annoys me, and I agree with you whole heartedly that it is just influence.

This is their strongest record for me, with Showbiz being my fave song off it. Sunburn is also a great, and Cave, and Muscle Museum, and Uno, Sober and Escape they are all great songs

I think this review is far, far too short. If you're gonna review something, do it properly and do it song by song and give a detailed description to what it is like and rate each one, then give an overall rating.

Personally I didn't like Showbiz as much as Origin of Symmetry or Absolution, but still a wicked album.

OOS > Absolution > Showbiz

In my opinion. I've been listening to this album a lot lately. Muse are just a wonderful band. I can't get enough of them.

Easily better than Absolution (Major disappointment), and comes in close with Origin Of Symmetry. This album serves up fast rocking songs and expressive ballads where they are needed, putting Muse firmly on the top of the Rock scene.

I got this album for free with my copy of "Absolution". I haven't listened to it in months, I'd better give it another spin. All I can remmeber is that it wasn't as good as "Absolution".

Couldn't choose a fave album but Showbiz is really amazing. I love that after Uno IMO the sort of feel of the album changes a bit, I guess it's because after track 9 none of them were singles but Escape, Sober and Overdue especially I love. Showbiz really is a classic, my faves would be... Muscle Museum, Cave and Escape.
It's a great debut, they were really well developed as a band seeing as they were only 20/21 when it was released, w/ some of the songs previously appearing on the Muse EP and Muscle Museum EP.
Muse are really talented, great band. Oh and for anyone who hasn't already check out their B-Sides, some of them really should've been album tracks *sigh*...

This is definately my favourite Muse record. I got this album just after Livid 2000, where I didn't see them, because at the time I had only heard Muscle Museum and there was a band I wanted to see on at the same time. Eh, I don't really like a lot of Absolution.

Showbiz as an album has to be the best band debut album ive ever heard. I don't skip any track on it which is a big thing for me because if a song bores me i simply change track. However i do occasionally skip the soung Showbiz, i think its good but not as great as all the other song. Im not decided on whats better though - OOS or Showbiz.

i dont think its fair to say 'oos is better' or or something because even though they are by the same band they are very, very different. i got the albums in reverse order and still cant choose one. while showbiz was a fantastic album, it wasnt like oos or absolution, but then that also works the other way around. it comes down to personal taste. i love showbiz, its so brooding, but ive noticed others really dislike it. i cant force them,
"take heed infidel! thou shalt not blaspheem the name of Showbiz!"
"thou speaketh of thy holy showbiz as if t'were the sacred Absolution, taste steel misguided one!"
surely not.
