another post on modes and fretboard range
ok then when i hear a guy like joe satriani say how he made a solo that covers the whole fretboard and based it of the b phrygian mode, how does he use the whole fretboerd? now i know the b phrygian mode as this
|--------------------------------------7-8-10------------------| |------------------------------7-8-10--------------------------| |--------------------------7-9----------------------------------| |------------------7-9-10--------------------------------------| |----------7-9-10----------------------------------------------| |--7-8-10------------------------------------------------------| which only covers the 7th to 10th frets so how do you make a solo in the phrygian mode that covers the whole fretboard? do you just extend the above scale? if so, how? |

the 7 on the low E is the root note (B)
half step up ....then a whole step...etc... you should *learn* the way the mode is constructed thenyou'll know that hey....i played a B on the 2nd fret of the A string so i just go up a half step...whole ste...etc... or..hey...i started the mode on the 7th fret of the high E string 7-8-10...just continue up that string...in order or mix it up so you dont sound to "scalar" go to the guitar section theres a thread in the "lesson and articlese" on scale help i *think* it might have some info that would be useful for you -G |

Okay, haha. This is a prime example of why is discourage the learning of scale positions as opposed to the actual notes in the scale.
Now, you know B phygrian as what you tabbed, I know B phygrian as "B, C, D, E, F#, G, A, B". Can you see the difference? Can you see where I'm going with this? By actually knowing the notes that make up the mod, you can easily weave in and out of it effortlessly throughout the fretboard. |
