how do u know when to use open chords and when to use barre chords? I know how to play both, but not sure when to use them as in an A, what type of A?

Open Amaj and barre Amaj are the same chord. You play barre when it's easier to play barre (like the last chord was closer to the fifth fret than it would be to move your hand all the way back to finger the open chord).

i use barre chords when i use lots of fx it's easier and better sounding in my opinion...but if it's clean i use open chords unless it's easier to use barres. in short just use either or when it's easier/better sounding.
