myself and huw discussed how exciting chile and colombia are - 3-3 it finish last night and it sounded an absolutely cracking game. Despite losing 1-0 to Ecuador, Uruguay have qualified for the play offs atleast. Can go through automatically and displace Chile if they win at home to Argentina in Montevideo and Chile lost at home in Santiago to Ecuador.

For all the talk of how bad the Colombian defense is compared to the attack, it's worth noting that they've only conceded 12 goals in 15 qualifying games. That's tied for the best defensive record along with Argentina. They were the best with only nine goals before last nights game.

EDIT: To be fair, Colombia's defense was pretty crappy last night.

Oh and: USA! USA! USA!

20 minutes in and I have no idea how Tunisia haven't scored yet. Five great saves already from the Cameroonian goalkeeper and Cameroon haven't even had a look at goal.

It's qualifying though pal. Argentina's defence for the record is hopeless too. For the great strides that south american teams have made since the collective league table format was introduced, brazil has been absent from this qualifying campaign and whilst sides like Ecuador have ascended and improved greatly it's conincided with Paraguay downward spiral too.

Next year I can see the likes of Yepes and Zapata just getting rinsed by the likes of Navas or Reus if they make it to the quarters or round of 16. But they've got some superb option in midfield and up front like Quintero, Rodriguez, Falcao, Martinez, Armero too is great going forward.`

paraguay are rubbish without chilavert, he was fun

i haven't watched argentina in ages, do they play mascherano at centre back? surely he's better than any proper defenders they have. fazio is alright as well, i guess.

Argentina actually have a pretty decent backline of Rojos, Garay, Campagnaro, and Zabaleta.

EDIT: Just realized Campagnaro wasn't called up to this squad, but there's still Coloccini and Frederico Fernandez.

that's a pretty rubbish backline, and romero is a bit shite as well

garay is probably the best, and he's not all that

Campagnaro is the probably the best defender they have in there, not exactly the quickest again though.

Gago normally plays too regularly in the side. Awful at club football in Europe but has a great understanding with Di Maria and Messi bizarrely. Leaves their centre backs very exposed however.

campagnaro spends most of his time in a back three, which covers up for a lot of his flaws. if mazzarri was the argentina coach, he'd be ok.

banega is usually alright, when he's not running himself over. but their squad is almost comically unbalanced.

No doubting that. When players like Pastore and Tevez can't even get a look in, you know there's a pretty decent attack.

What have been up with the Sounders Ando? Seriously, they were falling apart, then they were unstoppable, no they're falling apart again. They're making everything so confusing.

If they come back from 3-1 down, that'd be amazing. I'm really hoping it happens.

france should probably start losing/drawing less matches

that'd help them in the seeding i reckon

yeah, all those friendlies which fifa organised against decent opposition and forced france to fuck up really screwed you guys over (brazil, uruguay, chile, germany, japan, belgium, uruguay again)

or maybe the underage prostitution scandal, idk how statutory rape affects the fifa rankings

we used those friendlies to trial younger players, like most teams do. we only just missed out on being seeded so those two extra competitive games would've probably made the difference.

winning friendlies improves your fifa ranking and thus helps you become seeded

if france wanted to be seeded, they shouldn't have arranged all their friendlies against better teams/blooded too many youngsters

they've only got themselves to blame

idk how you can deny that there was a fundamental disadvantage, one which made all the difference. a team shouldn't have to be forced to accommodate that themselves

was shit luck to be drawn with spain in the first place when fucking england almost make a meal of ukraine being their biggest challengers

what is the disadvantage?

that you got drawn against a better team? coz that happens to everyone except the best team.
