Comparing Sticks

Hi there, a short thread, I havn't made one in a while...

Anyway, I currently use Buddy Rich sig sticks, but want to change them becuase it seems cheaper (especially buying in bulk) and I think I'm ready for the change. I want to get a different tip too, I loved the round tip when I used to use barkers sticks, so maybe that? I'm not determined to stick with any brand, but I favour vic Firth.

I know some of you will just say "try them out" or "get the same size and diameter". But I did that once by someone who advised me and they wern't comfy at all! really heavy and seemed beefy!?!

Anyway, if anyone wants to promote a stick brand and reasons why etc. I'd be interested to listen. I'm playing alot more than I used to and seem to chew through them alot more.

I've probably missed something but nevermind. Cheers if you help ouT

It's simple really; buy sticks that suit your hand size/shape and the style of music you play.

I generally buy the thinest, longest stick possible with a delayed taper so there's weight to the front of it for increasing volume, but not an awkward chunky grip so there's balance and I can use moeller easily at low volumes. 0.550" x 16.550" I've decided best suits me. Now that I've decided that it's simple; hunt for whatever is closest to that [i.e. The Elvin Jones Sigs]. Personally I like reduced size tips [mini-olive shaped, acorns etc] and a softer wood [I avoid oak sticks].

I see what you're saying, but vic firth fail to state weights on their website.... If they included this it might help me find a similar stick. I'm pretty happy with the Buddy sig, but maybe because I've used them for so long? I think the comfiest stick for me was the barker sig.

The important part, more than the weight, is how it's balanced. If it's a really gradual taper and you're playing heavier music you may have to put extra effort into moving it, but if it's weight is distributed towards the tip more then it's a different story.

damn its too complicated. I think the barker stick was so comfy I may have to go back to it. The white paint just sucks..... unless there's like a matching stick... but there's nowhere like here that stocks more than enough sticks to try out

I might buy barker sticks or even just buy some offline and try them out?

vic-firth omar hakim... very balanced, round nylon tip, short taper adds extra 'throw' to your hits without adding extra effort...
