It all depends how hard your drummer hits. Jamming with just a drummer, my Peavey Bandit (80W SS) was going to the limit. With a full band, i've played 100W - 150W SS, also going to the limit. I personally wouldn't use an SS amp with a live band (excluding quiet gigs like Jazz bands:P) unless it was at least 200-300W.
With tube amps its different. 5w could probably hold its own, but it'd be hard to keep any clean tones happening. I never go above 50w - I jammed with a Single Recto, barely even touching halfway; had I nudged that volume knob I could have obliterated the drummer.
