I certainly normally see hitting your kids (or whatever you want to call it) as a sign that you've already lost control of the child, and as an indicator of the fact that you could probably have stopped whatever it is that they're doing wrong by acting in a more moderate way earlier. Not all children are the same. Some listen, and some don't. If a child does not respond to normal discipline, then a little spanking isn't uncalled for.
