I was in the music store the other day, and I overheard a clerk tell a customer that you can play "fiddle music on a violin", and of course I thought to myself, "What an idiot." In fact,
fiddle is merely the traditional British term for
violin. Percy Grainger, who grew up in Australia, studied in Germany, made his mark as a composer in England, and then moved to the United States to escape WWI, calls the cello a "low fiddle" and the viola a "middle fiddle". The reason Appalachian Mountaineers traditionally call the
violin a
fiddle is that they're descendents of British Isles common folk.
