forsaken
innocence cannot stand in the face of depravity
a nation, morally bankrupt, ethically destitute
the bellies of the just emaciated
while amoral puppeteers gorge on the fruits of the land
juices flowing down double-chins
pooling on bloated stomachs
men relegated to a feral existence
scavenging table scraps
finding solace only in base pursuits
appeals to virtue fall on deaf ears
justice a false prophet, crucified
by the stakes of greed and hypocrisy
in the light of so much darkness
how can man ever hope to believe
that justice is something worth dying for
that virtue is something worth living for
and that their absence is worth crying for
