My first bass was a GSR, old-school style with the passive electronics. It works fine, and is an excellent bass to start out on, but I would move on to a higher quality bass as soon as you know that you're sticking with it and get enough money. The tone is thin compared to the rest of my basses, and I had to shim the pickups to get enough output, but other than that it's been flawless. I think I may have had to resolder the input jack once, but I'm not sure. The finish accumulates scratches easily, but it protects the wood very well. A good value, and excellent beginner axe.
