As for the grunge argument, I think "grunge" exists as a genre, but Pearl Jam are and never were a grunge band. If you listen to "real grunge" such as Mudhoney, the Melvins, Soundgarden, Alice In Chains, Tad and god forbid, Nirvana, they all are called grunge and the all sound similar. In contrast Pearl Jam sounds nothing like these bands and I haven't heard any other grunge bands that sound like Pearl Jam. So there.
ive always considered sound garden and pearl jam on the same level. both are more melodic and cleaned up, with vocalists with uber-strong voices.


EDIT: i too consider grunge a genre. a sub-genre of alternative, just as thrash metal, death metal, nu-metal are sub genres of metal.
