I enjoy my music to have real life connotations; while lyrics about drug use or struggles living within confines of society (as cliche as it sounds), when portrayed right, delivers an emotional resonance that I don't feel from other genres, as distinctly.

Why do you harbor such a grudge against hip hop? I don't like mainstream airwaves either, but you will never see me dismiss rock, country, etc based on on their mainstream counterparts.
