Changes

Hey guys,

If you see skins disappearing, forums contracting, etc don't be alarmed. I'm going to be modifying the forums over the next month or so -- think of this as a gradual relaunch.

Sweet... any sneaky hints as to what we can expect?

sweboy 07-07-2013 03:08 PM

The goal is to re-inject some life into the place. It'll get some new anti-spam protection, a new skin, and probably closer integration with the review site.

Open to your suggestions as well

Against All Authority 07-07-2013 03:11 PM

you can take the poster out of mx but you'll never take mx out of the poster

sweboy 07-07-2013 03:13 PM

maybe retire the alt&indie forum and instead start a kind of "general music discussion" forum, similar to the general forum on rateyourmusic - this could potentially appeal to the review site folks

Firecracker 07-07-2013 04:26 PM

thanks jezza

Not sure if this'd be regarded as a backwards step with respect to cleaning up the layout of the forums, but with the new genre tagging maybe there could be some way to link the genre pages to a related discussion page on the forums side as a way to try and integrate the two sides?

Ando! 07-07-2013 05:30 PM

i think they tried that to an extent with featured reviews being linked back to the forums or something

i dunno

Iscariot 07-07-2013 06:34 PM

Felt persuaded to take a look after this came up somewhere else.

Huge fucking lol at deleting 90% of the forums to re-inject some life into the place. Jeremy, you have the business sense of a fucking carrot.

Against All Authority 07-07-2013 07:25 PM

The line it is drawn
The curse it is cast
The slow one now
Will later be fast
As the present now
Will later be past
The order is
Rapidly fadin'
And the first one now
Will later be last
For the times they are a-changin'.

The forums were dead and full of spam. As I said in the first post, this is a long-term process.

dogpissdavidson 07-08-2013 02:37 AM

So you're deleting the boards that were the focus of the forum so the pit kids who never discuss music can circlejerk? How about deleting the community forum and focusing on what made this site popular, music and instruments.

dogpissdavidson 07-08-2013 02:39 AM

Also just wanted to say that Smokey D is a try hard turd lord who abuses his power and gives special treatment to his little friends.

The instrument focus made a lot of sense when the site was linked to mxtabs. But that type of community is only sustainable for so long when there isn't really an external traffic source. It 'survived' for 6 years or so -- which is longer than expected.

The plan is for there to be a music focus. Changes aren't finished yet.

dogpissdavidson 07-08-2013 02:51 AM

Honestly Jeremy I have been here since 2002 and I think what really killed this place was how insular it became. You have people like sweboy and ando who just sit around making inside jokes and never talk about music or any thing on topic. When a new person sees that the place is just a circlejerk of old users and no activity in the music forums it looks bad. There also needs to be moderators for the other forums, Smokey D and Black Ink only moderate the pit and pnwi because that's where their friends are. They are partly responsible for letting the music and instrument forums fizzle out because they didn't bother to delete the spam. I think a focus on music would be great and stop letting the attention whore users run the place.

It's my responsibility. I didn't notice the extent of the spam until it was too late.

On the subject of re-injecting life here -- it's going to be a much smaller forum. The old days aren't coming back. But hopefully there will be an influx of new posters from the review site, along with better spam controls, etc. The net change should be positive.
When a new person sees that the place is just a circlejerk of old users and no activity in the music forums it looks bad
and I'm sure behaviour like this
go back to the review site, turd lord
really helps the situation

dogpissdavidson 07-08-2013 03:36 AM

You are part of the problem, you never posted in the music or instruments forum and just circlejerk here and try to fit in.

Sanders 07-08-2013 03:43 AM

I post in the community because that's where the last remnants of this forum are concentrated. If the music or instrument forums were still used to the same extent I'd have posted there too.

But this isn't about me, I was just highlighting how the hostile nature of some users may hinder the efforts of mx to integrate the two sites

Firecracker 07-08-2013 03:52 AM

people definitely talked about instruments when there were tabs available and there were more younger kids learning songs on their instruments from the tabs on the site. now there seem to be less younger kids, probs cos the younger kids from '02 grew up and no younger kids joined post-losing the tabs.

those who use the new aspect of the site, the reviews, can talk about the individual reviews on the review site, so there's no reason for them to transfer to the forums unless they want a good chinwag in the community section.
