Hand Drumming

Just curious if anyone here plays with hand drums, like Djembe, Darbuka, tablas, etc, and maybe some techniques that you might use.

I've been messing around with these three because they are all lying around in my room, and they're a blast to play with acoustics or not too loud amps when you don't have a drum set available or you want a different sound.

Djembe FTW. They're fun, but I prefer drumming so much more.

yeah nothing beats a drum set.. that's for sure. But I live in a dorm right now so I gotta make do with drums that are a little less loud. I like using Darbuka because of all the finger rolls and shit you can do on it. It sounds real cool too, kinda like a snare drum of sorts. Me and my buddies set up all 4 drums in a kind of hand drum set, which was really fun to play.

I mess around with my friend's djembe quite a bit, but I've never really approached it as an instrument that I could learn and utilize as I do with drums, bass, and guitar

That Udu looks ill, might take some practice to get it down tho. It looks like you'd need a lotta finesse in your hand motion to really get the pitches right and what not. Might have to actually take a lesson or two to get it down. I've tried teaching myself how to play Tablas just by fucking around with them but its really hard.. I'd imagine its kinda the same. Sounds cool though, you any good at playing it?

Pearldrumguy 11-12-2009 06:15 PM

Conga, Quinto, Tumbadora! Still working on my slaps. It's a lot harder than people think.

SgtBaker 11-12-2009 06:18 PM

tabla is supposed to be one of the hardest hand drums. udu isn't that bad, you just have to keep your hand as flat as possible when you hit the hole. i just mess around on it tho, it is fun.

Yeah.. tablas are rediculous, they sound so cool though. I definitely got pretty frustrated with them. I looked online and found some Udu videos with a dude playing like 4 of them, it was mad cool.

pearl_srx 12-01-2009 09:43 PM

im interested in getting a set of tablas, theres a guy on you tube that gives online lessons, theres so many sounds that you can make with the tabla and tool fans have to dig them...and on the udu, i felt like a tard when i walked into a music store and thought they were flower pots, then seen a guy playing them....

I would like to say I bought a Leatherman Wave I was wondering does Multi-Tools counts as a hand tool The Leatherman Wave can have bits put into it. Its only like 20 for a 20 piece set of bits?
