Multi Effects pedals...
 

Just a quickie; what does everyone think of multi-effects pedals?
This one on particular:

Just wondering if anyone has used it, and what they think, or if there are any comparable pedals that could be recommended?

My guitar player has the line 6 one and it's unbelievably helpful

Doesn't do distortion very well though

Distortions covered really, the amp provides a fair bit, and I've pedals that'll do the rest.

On further reading, the one I posted seems a little less than ideal, for live purposes at least, as it seems if I need to use more than one setting in a song, it'll be a bitch to tweak.
That said, I'm not sure I'd ever need to use more than one of those in a song, but the point remains. Puts me off paying so much, but so far its still front-runner.

Any comparable ones? Hows that Line6 one working out?

A quick thought; would it be better to go for something like this, or just get a regular expression pedal and some other pedals to hook it up to?*

Check out my recording it was made with a Digitech RP350. It has all that stuff plus quite a bit more Also has a usb out and the editing software to tweak patches and save them easier. Its a bit bigger than the one your looking at but would be easier to use in a live situation if needed. I like the fact that you can switch off the amp and cab modeling to keep your own sound....

Line 6 Pod XT Live, they are really great. Im not one to much like multi-effects boards, but the Pod XT Live is increadable. The Distorion is weak, but the modulation effects are superior to a lot of analog effects Ive heard. Easily the best Multi-effects unit on the market these days. My advice is buy the Pod instead of the Digitech Crap-Factory. Unfortunately however; they run about $400 CDN.

He's talking about the Line6 M13.
It does 75 effects and about 40 or so really well.

Pros
-universal tap tempo
you have no idea how useful this is. to be able to sync your delays and your tremelos and your seek wahs and your flangers and your butt sliding and just about everything makes life so much easier.
-delays.
a lot of people like the line 6 dl4 but rat on it for breaking. this thing is built like a tank and you can run 4 dl4s at once if you were so inclined (i rarely go over 2 different delays at the same time)
-Looper
This is just a nice bonus.I mean, this is a kind of looper thats only useful live. You can't save any loops. but you can go half/double speed, reverse and ****. which is great fun.
-expression pedals.
You said you didnt know what expression pedals do. They are what my den mother affectionately calls "foot knobs." all they do is change the value of one or many of parameters of different effects controlled by the knobs on the unit. so you could find a effect you like and have 2 settings (one in the heel position or one in the toe). or you can do crazy **** like play a delayed note and slowly increase the speed of the delay, use it for volume swells, feedback the **** out of a space echo, discover the secret to infinite sustain or some of the other things i use it for.

I didn't realize how barely passable the distortions were until i got a radial tonebone.

I just built(am in the process of building) my own pedalboard. I had to build a separate board just for this ****er. kinda sucks, but theres no way its gonna break.
-tiny knobs.
This is just a personal thing, but I have giant ****ing hands. the knobs are tiny. its a pain in the ***.

my biggest beef with multi-fx is the fact that if the delay sounds cool, but the phaser doesnt, then whats the point of having it if you need a good phaser. thats just an example.

another example is if something happens with it, batteries die, screen cracks, anything, you just lost ALL your effects. sometimes a beer can slip out of your hand inbetween songs and now instead of losing one or two pedals you lost everything.

and you have to cycle through patches. i like single effectxs bc everything is right in front of your face. if you have patch A thats delay, then patch B is delay and phaser, and patch C is phaser and chorus, an d pathc D is chorus, if you want to go from D to A thats a lot of clicking. then u might click 4x instead of 3x and now ur all ****ed up.

also i feel if the effects were so good, multis wouldnt be so much cheaper than buying single effects. you cant get the same circuitry in the same order in a mutl ithn u can on single effects, so idk if all the effects will suffer, but a lot of them might.

but i always think live. if youre a bedroom guy, those things are great for ****ing around, but i never buy anything i wouldnt bring on stage with me.

wut?

i need to stop coming on mx when im drunk. to summarize.....

why pay $300 for a multi-fx board when u only need a $100 phaser.....

if your big muff breaks, you can replace it (or run without it for a gig) while still using your digidelay and phase90. if your multi-fx board breaks, you lose all effects.

going through patches and memory banks is a hassle. sometimes you may forget whats saved on what. having individual stompboxes with lights and knobs is easier.

if you are paying $300 for 8 pedals in one, when each pedal cost $100, i would thin kteh quality of each effect (and tweakability) wouldnt be so great.

all above opinions are based on the idea you will be taking this thing on gigs and on the road. if you leave it in your bedroom its fine i guess.

I intend to try out as much as i can, and if I can get as many of the effects i need in one handy pedal, I hope thats a bonus :)

I own a TC Electronics G-System

It is awesome super easy to use especially with a laptop and so much fricken versatility my god...

i actually just got that unit and the effects really arent that bad, not to mention you get a digitech whammy. which is $200 in itself, a flanger which isnt bad leslie speaker sim, univibe 2 wahs, its not bad but then again i only paid $150 used. they sell a pedal to switch between patches.

The thing about the line6 m13 is that I have played shows just using it, and it worked fine, but I wouldn't say my tone was perfect. Using it as a reverb/delay/mod/weird noises box, I have found I love it a lot more then a "all in one all you need."

So if you're looking for a multi-fx to cover all your basics (which differs for everyone... I know some people just go by dirt and reverb) I don't know if its for you. I love it though, my playing wouldn't be the same without it :D
