What Overdrive pedal does the muse bassists use?

Hi guys i was wondering what overdrive or distortion pedal the bassist from muse uses and what settings he probably uses from such songs as time is running out and hysteria?

eriatarka 12-19-2006 06:55 PM

Some kind of muff? Possibly a Russian Muff.

Akira 12-19-2006 06:56 PM

Hysteria is actually a synthesizer, not bass. Live he backtracks the synth and plays clean under it.

This man is right. He uses two Russian Big Muffs chained together.

at the bottom. and as far as i can tell, Wolstemholme doesn't use 2 Big Muffs, simply because if all the pictures i've ever seen of his gear, i've only seen 1 Big Muff on his board at all times. Muse are kind of my 'obsession band'.

i could, as always, be wrong though. which i probably am, considering almost everyone says he uses 2 muffs...

Radiobass81 12-19-2006 07:29 PM

Last I heard, he uses a Double Muff, which is something different from two Muffs. The Double Muff is actually a pedal.

But I don't follow.

EDIT: Seems Hartke is with me. ONE Muff, called the Double Muff.

EDIT2: But alas, not on the list :upset:.

Part of Muse's distinctive sound is produced by Wolstenholme's use of distortion, he has been one of few modern bassists to pioneer distortion and fuzz in songs, especially live. Favouring the Electro Harmonix Big Muff distortion / sustainer, this was used alongside a BOSS Bass overdrive and other effects.

i don't see a double muff though. but i remember reading somewhere on the Museforums that he gets his magical tone from his Animato distortion (no longer made). good luck to anyone without a digital modeler and 2 amps who wants to get Chris' tone.

hartke20g 12-19-2006 07:46 PM

1 more picture. it wouldn't take with the forum, so i had to do a new post. since when do quotes count as pictures?

Smileys count as pictures, and there's a smiley on the quote.

hartke20g 12-19-2006 07:56 PM

of course. the face of the internets is a picture, as is the internets itself.:p

Russian Big Muff will do you fine.

Its what i use, i get a pretty musey tone, if you want to sound like him.

d-basser 12-20-2006 06:42 AM

russian Big Muff and a Digitech BSW should satisfy all your muse-ish needs, you'll have to accept you'll never sound just like Chris but they'll do just fine
Oh sorry, I get them confused.
hehe sorry man my post seemed quite rude looking back at it!

he doesnt use a double muff... he actually used 2 big muffs to record some stuff .. live it might be different...but all the pictures posted are quite old.. he now uses a pedal bored which is linked to a pedal board back stage or something like that.. its more like a switch bored..

he also uses an octave pedal in a lot of songs like citizen erazed and plug in baby (he also uses a phaser in plug in baby)

Thunder Fingers 12-20-2006 12:41 PM

From Bassplayer October 2006, i would guess thats right, since they have spoken with the guy.

mikethecoug 12-20-2006 01:04 PM

On hysteria i heard that he uses a muff in one channel and goes clean on the other to get that tone.

I have the digitech synthwah and i get a pretty decent muse tone through it.

Thunder Fingers 12-20-2006 01:12 PM

ofcoursed, Chris use it...

i noticed, two of the pedals he use aint possible to get unless you have a load of money.
