Bowing Up

Hello MX,

I was recently, (Fine, this weekend.) at my cousin Eric's house. He is an avid violin player.

Why should you care? He gave me a bow. I'd like to know if there are any lessons you guys have dug up on it, for the guitar.

No, I didn't ask him, please, no "lawl u never be Jimmy Page! nub!" posts.

I can make a few sounds, but really want to get better.

havent seen anythin

There really isn't all that much you can do with a bow, violin and instruments like that are created to the bowed, whereas the bridge on a guitar isn't suited for that.

nick911sc 06-13-2006 12:52 PM

Use it wisely because it'll break soon.

Longhorn22 06-13-2006 12:59 PM

Ok, thanks for trying all. Thanks for the advice Nick and Josh.

Woofdog 06-13-2006 01:02 PM

Yeah it'll be hard to play single strings, or anything less than like 5 at once, as the bridge on a guitar isn't arched like a violin's is.

lozz 06-13-2006 01:06 PM

ow yeh try diffrent tuneings to get nice a** drowns

Longhorn22 06-13-2006 02:02 PM

Gotcha Lozz. And Woofdog, I've noticed that. Watching the Led Zep concert to get some ideas.

Tune your strings to a chord and play all your strings at once.

Alpepiman 06-13-2006 02:18 PM

Set your bring like an arc like a violin.

WindowLedge 06-13-2006 02:20 PM

there was a lesson on this in the old lessons section, dunno if it's still around

DrunkenMimes22 06-13-2006 02:22 PM

if you have a bass you can use it to sound like a stand up bass I have done that a few times... I use mine on my acoustic guitar just holding down chords and bowing the strings, it's also cool to do it on an electric guitar with effects.. like delay or a phaser.

you want an E-bow. Your guitar will tear horsehair to shreds.

Longhorn22 06-13-2006 04:05 PM

I'll take a look at my local Guitar store, Puzzle. Any idea how much theyd cost? 0.o

Danger Bird 06-13-2006 04:06 PM

Just use lots of rosin and make sure the bow's tight.

Longhorn22 06-13-2006 04:25 PM

Thanks

ebows are like 90 bucks at guitar center, and they are quite possibly one of the coolest synth guitar effects for a guitar. They let me sit there and mess around with one for like an hour or so... it was awesome

Amit 06-13-2006 07:10 PM

they aren't a synth guitar effect

haha, yeah, when i saw the how the west was won dvd set, it showed a close up on the strings of his guitar, and you could see like half of the hairs on the bow were broken.

i like how he used a delay, and hit the strings with the bow, so it sounded like he hit it twice.
