Description:
I don't remember why I decided to download their demo, but I'm definitely glad I did. Set Your Goals provides a unique mix of pop-punk-like vocals intense hardcore shouts, and catchy sing-a-longs. The guitar work on the demo is also quite good, and as a whole, the band is very talented. The only disappointment to their music is that there really isn't enough of it to experience the full potential of this clearly amazing band.

If Set It Straight was a bit too hardcore for you, these guys should be exactly what you're looking for. Their sound is very catchy, and many of their vocals would fit perfectly into any pop-punk song. Overall these guys are an excellent band, and I definitely expect them to become big in both the pop-punk and hardcore scenes over the next couple of years.

Anyone interested in hearing their full demo can IM me or grab it from me on Soulseek. Also, if you enjoy the demo, be sure to check out their full-length debut, due out sometime next summer.

Description:
Well this will require a lot of branching out for you guys. Melodic Black Metal is epic, but totally unlike anything most of you guys listen to. In essence, to get this band, you take the epicness of a symphony, use it to back pulsing double bass and tremelo picked guitar riffs, and over it all place a screaming/growling vocalist.

This will require an open mind, but I hope you all at least give it a shot as this is a fantastic genre of music I doubt anyone else in this forum is very exposed to. Some of you may be exposed to Dimmu Borgir. This band is a bit harder and gruffer than them, but there is still the sense of melody in the music and the overall atmosphere of the music is the same.

Diabolical is their most acclaimed release to my knowledge, and I have Vittra's reissue or Diabolical available on slsk or AIM. The song on their pv is from Pariah I'd guess though, but I don't have that album. Anyways, give it a listen, I think this is some of the most well composed music around

I love death/black metal

You pretty much got it right with Naglfar

B 10-29-2005 10:29 PM

Both bands sound great. I'll check them both out tomorrow, as I have too much checking out to do right now :p.

Im going to try Naglfar. Black metal is about the only genre I actually can say I don't listen to anything that falls into that genre, should be a good listen.

Naglafar was underwhelming, judging from their purevolume song. The whole song sounded exactly the same. The 'epic'ness from the keyboard symphony was stupid. Epicness doesn't come from playing the same note that the guitar is doing. Lame. Plus, this band has the silliest description ever. "We OPEN THE GATES OF HELL!"

"Goonies Never Die" by Set Your Goals was a really, really enjoyable song. I love the beginning breakdown that still remained very pop-punky, and the one later on in the song too. I didn't expect to like this band, but I was impressed. Their bassist is a beast. I'm going to look into them. Cheers, Brian.

IT'S 8 O'CLOCK ON MONDAY NIGHT AND I'M STILL IN THE BATH

Yeah, Set your Goals are good. I'm not sure if I'll check out Naglfar because I probably won't like them anyway.

All Metal bands are cheesy, seriously. But try an album off em on slsk and see if that doesn't suit you better.

I like set your goals a lot but Naglfar aren't really my style, but I thought they were okay.

Gnarmageddon 10-30-2005 11:50 AM

I downloaded a Naglfar album off of Vince the other day (along with tons of other stuff :p), and they're AWESOME.

Set Your Goals is really good too. Great blend of hardcore and pop punk.

Once again, nice job Brian. Edit: And Vince. :p

Harsh. =/

I'm a huge Naglfar fan, although their latest album isn't very good. "Sheol" is awesome though, and "I Am Vengeance" is one of the best metal songs of all time.

Metal is cheesy.

That doesn't make it bad. That just makes it cheesy.

But true. I like all sorts of metal, but I know it's true. I still love Metal. You'll note I am trying to get kids here into a Metal band :)

RetiredAt21 10-30-2005 10:15 PM

I like both of those bands. Especially Naglfar.

cbmartinez 10-31-2005 02:20 PM

Set Your Goals is good but you should pick something that personally reccomend. Everyone in the hardcore forum has been shitting themselves over SYG for a long time.

Mute Print 10-31-2005 02:48 PM

I don't pay much attention to the hardcore forum, so I didn't really know that. Also, I do personally recommend Set Your Goals, that's why I'm introducing them to the pop-punkers who may not have heard any of the hype over them, and probably haven't have ever heard any of there music. :-\

cbmartinez 10-31-2005 02:53 PM

Meh, fair enough. I've just seen too much jocking of them.

Mute Print 10-31-2005 02:55 PM

Next time I'll try to pick a band who hasn't been talked about much recently, if at all. I have a few in mind.

cbmartinez 10-31-2005 03:09 PM

Marigold ;)

Mute Print 10-31-2005 03:11 PM
Marigold ;)
Heh, I wouldn't want to do one on them, because I know you could do it much better, seeing as you've been listening to them a lot longer than I have.

But if you wanted to write it... ;)

cbmartinez 10-31-2005 03:12 PM

I'm pretty sure everyone on here is sick of me jocking them.
