Teles are wicked for jazz.
 

I just got this tele from ebay, and the bridge pickup it smoother than like...your mum.

It would sound awsome for jazz chords, or jazzy riffs.

So if anybody could link me to some kinda website with jazz chords etc, it would be very helpful. Thanks.

If you want to learn jazz, the best way is to buy a fakebook and learn to play songs out of there. Those chord referances are good, but just learning a few chords won't get you anywhere. For jazzy licks, you just need to learn your scales, modes, how they relate to chords, etc.

I strongly disagree about Telecasters. They're for good for country and western, and that's pretty much it.

i love the sound of telecasters and i think they do jazz just fine, especially fusion style playing ex. Mike stern.

Telecasters CAN have a great jazz tone. Mabye not all of them, but at least the one I own can(It's just a mexi standard, too). Of course, you can get the classic tele twang, but that's not the only tone it has.

Well, I didn't say that it was... only that the telecaster is a hell of a lot more versatile than Ned was giving it credit for.

But to say that Bill Frisell and Ed Bickert's music isn't 'really true jazz' is absolute bull****... either ignorance or elitist Young Lion crap of the worst kind... listen to Bickert's playing on [i]Pure Desmond[/i] or Frisell's recent collaborations with Dave Douglas or Fred Hersch; they're as much jazz musicians as anyone you'd care to name.

Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck, and Danny Gatton obviously aren't/weren't jazz musicians... but if you listen to Gatton's duet record with Joey DeFranesco, you'll hear some great jazz tones.

Mike Stern uses Tele's, and he's hella cool.

Jazz or not, I've always hated Frisell's timbre, and as I said several times in the "Rhythm of Hendrix" thread, Jimmy Page's tone quality is poor. I said specifically, in fact, that his tone quality on "Stairway to Heaven" is poor. I don't know about the recording, but, in concert, however, he was using a double-necked guitar on this tune (during that tour). It certainly was not a standard Telecaster. I've never heard of Bickert and Gatton. If they routinely use Telecasters, I probably don't [i]want[/i] to hear of them. As for Jeff Beck, you'd better be more specific.

It doesn't matter whether YOU [i]like[/i] the tones or not... after all, you've never gigged with Paul Motian, Joe Lovano, Chris Potter, Uri Caine, Dave Douglas, Elvis Costello, Chet Baker, Jan Garbarek, John Zorn, Don Byron, Lee Konitz, Jerry Douglas, Jenny Scheinman, Petra Haden, Ron Carter, Viktor Krauss, Ron Miles, etc., all of whom seem to like Frisell's timbre.

The fact of the matter is that the telecaster is much more versatile than 'a country and western' instrument, and that to deny this is just ignorant.

If you want proof of that, then yes, listen to Danny Gatton, Ed Bickert, Albert Collins, Steve Cropper (Booker T and the MGs), Roy Buchanan, Prince, Keith Richards, the Hellecasters, Bill Frisell, Jeff Beck (the solo in [i]'Cause We've Ended as Lovers[/i], since you requested an example), Ry Cooder, Muddy Waters, Manuel Galban, [i]Led Zeppelin I[/i] (and the solo of the studio version of [i]Stairway[/i]), etc.

Don't confuse the Telecaster shape with a specific sound. There's is such a thing as stacked humbuckers :wave:

My Les Paul sounds rally good with the tone knob down and on the rhythm pickup. It's perfect for jazz, usually. Hollowbodies are also very appropriate, since you usually get a much more natural sounding, and warmer, tone.

In point of fact, even country and western deserves better.

this isnt a question with a right or wrong answer. Its a matter of preference.

Telecasters sound awesome. I'm not sure what Ned's problem is, maybe there's a stick up his *** or something.
