Music Mags
So then, what does alt/indie read? I've been searching in vain for a magazine that offers a half decent amount of album, single and gig reviews each week or month.
And please do not suggest NME. |
I say this every time they're brought up here, but music magazines are basically all trash. Especially since it's so easy to find good reviews and news online, for free.
I'll sometimes grab a Rolling Stone to read on the train, but I usually regret it. |
I kind of have an alt. motive for teh thread, I need to find a magazine with a decent length review of any rock gig really to use as model for part of my English coursework (gig review).
Any ideas? |

Any ideas?
could you not get a review off of the internet? |

I could use that as a third model, but I'd prefer to have two hard copies (scans) of a real magazine as I can comment on far more features (eg. layout, typography etc) instead of just a text review off the internet. |
Wonkavision is my favorite.

In that case I don't really know any good ones. The only magazine I really buy is total guitar and I don't know why because its pisss poor, the reviews in there are also shocking. I suppose Q can be ok, but on the whole quite poor |
Hmm, does anyone know if Melody Maker still exists?
|
Altranate Press sucks
Spin is pretty good, fun for a long car ride/plane ride and I personally like this obscure magazine called Grooves. (electronic music) |
Magazines on the whole are lame. Too many advertisements, not enough content. Not to mention the content usually blows as well.
|
I'm a big fan of Filter, Clash is also quite good, and Q has its moments when it's not being insanely list-orientated. And Word is also quite good, although that's not just music.
|
I get Q every month, its probably not the best, but if you get it postal ordered its pretty cheap for such a pack-filled magazine, some features can be pretty good and it gives a good listing for gigs/listening and stuff.
|
Paste and Filter are very, very good. Mojo is great as well, but focuses a lot more on the past. New Music Monthly is very good because it comes with a CD full of interesting singles, but is very expensive. I'd reccomened Paste the most I think.
|
If you're from the UK you should trying getting MOJO or Uncut. They do (on the whole) honest critical reviews on a wide range of music. I'd reccocmend MOJO especially, they do good free CDs as well. :thumb:
|
Spin usually, but Q is good.
|
Out of all of these, which one usually has the longest gig reviews?
Also, how easy are magazines like Paste to find? |
Sometimes I'll buy the NME if I'm bored and have 30 minutes to spare/it comes with a good CD (my secret shame). Every now and again I'll buy Mojo/Uncut/Q though.
I also buy Total Guitar every now and again. |

I love the Rolling Stones issue with Jennifer Love Hewitt in the cover?

Local fanzines.

Think the NME absorbed them a while back :( I buy the occassional Q, but I mainly just wait around for my dad to buy his usual Mojo/Uncut/Record Collector. If there's a decent looking cd on a mag I'd probably treat myself as well. |
Q is ok. I like to browse through a rolling stone or a spin every now and then.
|
I usually pick up Rolling Stone or Blender if I need something to read, and my friend's band was featured in Spin, so it is an okay mag aswell.
|
I think Spin is pretty decent.
|
I have a subscription to Downbeat, but that's basically a jazz magazine.
|
Blender is the best music magazine out there. It's so entertaining and they recommend great music.
|
Nme.

It's one of the worst I've ever read, up there with RS and Spin. Q used to be good until they switched editors about 2 years ago to the guy who masterbates to the Strokes and Nirvana. |
I read local street presses. The height of them is annoying and the amount of ads is irritating, but they are free and generally better than music magazines that you pay for.
|
The only one I read on a regular basis is Q, even though it's gone so far downhill in the last few years...it used to be a great read, but now it's pretty much the Nirvana special edition every month. :-\ It still beats any other major music magazine that I've tried though, and their top 100 album list next month should be quite interesting, hopefully.
Is it the Top 100 of all time or the last year? Because that of the last year is pretty interesting usually, but the all-time one is downright gross. I think Nevermind was #1 last time, which is just a downright joke. |
